jasher 55
Cold hard rain is the best at putting foxes to ground, how many times do you see foxes traveling about in the snow "lots".. , checking earths to much..yes I'd say you could but I've also sent a lad to a drain that i checked the day before to put him off going to the earths i wanted to get to first lol, he had two and i had one.... . Keep checking, the more the merrier and after 28 years with terriers I'de say theres no set rules to finding a fox toground. Just to add to the lad that asked depends also on the land you hunt, a lot of my land contains a lot of tightly planted forestry blocks and find that a strong cold wind drives them to ground as they can't get shelter from it like they can in other conditions. Guest ragumup
This is the reason why alot of lads pack up terriers trapesing round checking say fox 50 holes a day for nowt! i know it pisses me off lol Quote Link to post

Guest Leveller
yeah pal shes already been dug to once i dont doubt the dogs finding ability at all she finds rats no bother in the rubbish tips and has marked fox to ground for older more experienced terriers to enter .... One swallow doesn't make a summer, if it were me I'd be running a "made" dog through afterwards, rats and foxes are very different quarry. Quote Link to post

jamie2004live 163
To be honest I rarely have a day In the season when I can't find a fox for a few reasons I don't bother with little 2 3 holers that only hold a handful of times a year and you have to be lucky to be there when there's one in. I go for the big nasty ones, rock piles (the bankers) over the years I've built up a big collection of these that I would say are in a 20 mile range of my house, ive learned these the hard way over many skived days off school, 15 pints down the boozer with old timers, following the hunt you name it. Checkin the little easy spots over and over will make you a handful of foxes! Test your mutts and you will be guaranteed foxes! Having a good dog there that can mark and tell you the difference in what hes marking is the way forward Edited June 14, 2011 by jamie2004live Quote Link to post
mickyatch 37
Fair play to all the lads comments ill take them on board and try my best jamie i think ill struggle with follwoing a hunt they just dont seem interested in letting young lads have a look w there pups all aboutt he older lads who get there dogs in and job dont and they dont seem to like letting me or otheres tag along ... as for the lurcher that marks fox why :S a terrier can do exactly the same job of marking fox and fox only why would i need a lurcher ? these local spots within walking distance are never more then 5 holes maximum and i suppose its what meks it a sport if you dropped on everytime it wouldnt be so fun guess ill just havta keep pluggin away and work hard this winter just bugs the life outta me going to a big kicked out hole stinkinan no postivie mark but if ive learned one thing its to trust the dog even if she is only a pup asnd i need some nice puppy earths for her no point throwing her in a rock spot mate it prioblies spoil the pup Quote Link to post
Guest busterdog
I think your missing the point with the lurcher mate, they find more earths for you and you can leave them running free, you can't do that with a terrier they'd be up shit creek in no time, plus the lurcher could run one in for you. 1 Quote Link to post
