show bred salukis

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how good a show bred saluki is for hunting? i have two show bred whippets that are very keen hunters and workers. Do show bred salukis still have a strong hunting instinct like many whippets do? I was thinking of getting a saluki bitch and put one of my whippets over it to get a good rabbit and hare dog. I live in australia where the saluki breed is quite rare and the only ones here are show bred dogs.

You have to take the chance I'd say. I would use a show saluki for a longdog, hoping that the century of breeding for show has minimal effect on the overall saluki fysiology...and I would be cross-breeding anyway. I wouldn't use any saluki though but look for a really good mover with good feet...perhaps there is some racing or lure coursing around?

Problem might be that the saluki owners might not cooperate for a mating. If it is the really petty show scene they're probably against outcrossing let alone using the dogs for hunting...but you might be lucky.

I would love to read future posts on sal/whips working in freedom and space where you are :victory:

Personally, i would only breed from prooven stock, over generations.

Too risky from what you discribed Pilgrim. Your whippets are young and just starting out, give them at least 3 seasons under their belts anway, before you seek a prooven saluki for stud. ;)

Sounds good Pilgrim. :)

I am myself, will wait till my whippet bitch pup is 4 years old and see how she fares out before putting her to stud and keeping a bitch pup back for my own use.

Hopefully, if she makes the grade, im looking at one of Mike Browns whippets. ;)

The show salukis are going down the same road as the show deerhounds, but probably not as bad :cry: But, it will happen. Show folk breed for exaggerated points, ear carridge etc, and will forget what the 'Noble one' was bred for in the first place. People in the deerhound show world are even trying to change the orginal breed standard for this dog, to suit their big, lazy cart horses, and mark my words it is/will happen with the salukis.

Ive coursed in the highlands on days when deerhounds and salukis were both there to do the business, and also on the borders when the Saluki club ran their dogs  . The top bloke by far then was Paul Sagar (mind you there are 2 of these,) Never saw Paul with his dogs at a KC show :hmm:

People in the show world will bemoan the fact that there are 2 types, but the fact remains, there will become a definate show type of saluki, and a working type of saluki, the same as there are both types in whippets, greyhounds, borzois and unforunately, deerhounds. You should see some of the shit Im getting from individuals in the deerhound world because of what Ive written, notice I say getting, not, taking. And, I would think seriously before using, or buying any show type of sighthound. There are plently of lads around that are working their salukis, stick to something from them, and avoid the magority of the show ones.

I had a very showy Saluki bitch one time. People who admired the breed and knew what they were looking for drooled over her. Personally, I drooled over her single handed hare catching abillity.

But that was thirty years ago in england. Thirty years is an aeon in Dogs.

Nice dogs Doxhope :good:

A guy who beats at a shoot I go to, was telling me about how he used to keep salukis and salukixs and told me that they are the dopeyest dogs he has ever owned, anways injuring themselves etc.

Any truth?

The only pure bred Saluki's I have ever seen belonged to Paul Sagar. He and one of his friends, whom from memory was called Lance, brought a pup up about 9 years ago. I saw it catch and retrieve a ferreted rabbit and it was pretty impressive.

I don't know if he showed his dogs or not but they were defenatly KC Reg Salukis.

He also seemed pretty switched on and like he knew his stuff.

The one I saw seemed okay. The retrieve was notthe quickest in the world, but it still came back to hand.

I think the problem is that so many people assume that sulukis are untrainable because of what they have read.

There's alot to be said about having an open mind.

Seen them coursing on Darva moor in Scotland about 20 years ago first pair that ran as thick as shit took ages to get them back spoilt some good coursing,Then a fella stepped up to the slipper with one of his what a dog obidient caught the hare and retreive it back dragging the other saluki with him, talked to the guy after ex military type ,he confirm what I already knew he had put alot of time into them ,like all dog breeds you get back what you put in .

Would never breed to show type have to see both dogs working before mating,It is a traversty all the majestic animals now that coursing has been banned will revert to the ring

In my limited experience, i would reckon an outcross to a show type could be OK, however there is no substitute for a decent working hound, but if you have to use a show dog, i would try and pick one that has the shorter coat.

I beleive Paul Sagar's dogs were/are the shorter coated types, and all the clips of the arabs coursing with salukis in the desert show the shorter haired type.I beleive the longer haired types have more show type blood and are bred more for appearance.

Me and my brother had a saluki hybrid when we were teenagers(he was smooth coated), he was very trainable, i believe the dogmen that cant get on with saluki types are also the type that pass on dogs and try and buy ready made dogs, a saluki gets on best as a one man dog and needs to feel part of that pack, he will then give of his best.

Finn our dog would walk at heel with no lead, he would sit, stay and jump on command, he was a decent ferreting dog and was stock steady with everything ,yet he would chase anything though on command and we often used him to chase stray dogs away from out stock/chickens etc... he was brave, loyal, fast , loaded with stamina, and very brave, sadly he wasn't much of a stud dog and he failed to succesfully mate my uncles, deerhound/grey x saluki/grey,

he caught loads of rabbits, both ferreting, bushing with a bobbery pack, and lamping, as well as hares, foxes and roe deer both by day and on the lamp.

if i could have another dog like Finn i would, sadly he went to live with my brother, he got out of his garden and got run over , he was 8 when he died  .
