ferreterjohn 0 Posted June 11, 2011 Report Share Posted June 11, 2011 My Hobb ferret is covered in ticks, i have cleaned his hutch out and disinfected it, ive pulled the big ticks out with tweezers, but can see a load of smaller ones, and there may be eggs in his fur, i don,t know. can anybody give me some advice on how to get ride of them all, is that like a spot on solution for ferrets, or a shampoo i can bath him in to gget ride of ticks, any advice appreciated John Quote Link to post

Also get yourself a tick removing tool (couple of quid) as using a tweezers can kill them and leave the head if you not got the knack with it. Quote Link to post

Kittens mate, or i think you can get one thats been ok'd for ferrets anyway, not sure, but kittens or cats and use a small bit. Not sure about the licking but mine have not had the problem, and its what the vets etc would advise. Have a google search. Quote Link to post

ferret100 47 Posted June 11, 2011 Report Share Posted June 11, 2011 It sounds like your hob has had the unforunate luck of being near a tick nest as the larvae ticks were emerging. When you pull the ticks off see if they have 6 legs or 8, this will identify if they are larvae or nymphs/adults if you're bothered. The Frontline will certainly disturb them enough to cause many to fall off, but it probably won't kill them (they will just drop off and hide in the woodwork til they need another feed.) The active ingredient of Frontline is an insecticide, as ticks aren't insects, there is no real proof it works against ticks. Ticks don't lay eggs in/on a host so don't worry about that. Personally I'd use a tick picker and remove them as soon as could get them off safely and drop the little in some boiling water. I'm really not a fan of rubbing Frontline over ticks on the ferrets body for disease prevention factors, but it's your ferret, your choice. As your ferret will be loosing/lost alot of blood from the tick infestation, a small daily dose of red meat for the next wee while might help keep his blood iron content healthy so you don't end up with an anaemic ferret to top it all off! Rake aboot 4,936 Posted June 11, 2011 Report Share Posted June 11, 2011 First off,,,,ditch the tweezers, Get an Autom tick remover from the vet / pet shop Rub a little frontline all over the ferret by spraying it onto a glove and rubbing it in. Ticks need not be a big issue IF you deal with them sensibley,, don`t get all voodoo on them with fags and vasaline etc,, Sounds like you know what to do anyway,, just ditch the tweezers ATB Quote Link to post

If you've got them registered at the vet's just give them a call and they should give you some, I say this because I could'nt get it over the counter. northern lad 2,292 Posted June 15, 2011 Report Share Posted June 15, 2011 one of my jills escaped from my mates hobs hutch,turned up 3 weeks later in neighbours chicken coop oops.two days later noticed ticks on her got some effipro spray off the vet applied 3 squirts to her next day all gone lasts for 6 weeks.that was 3 weeks ago had none since atb Quote Link to post
