watchman 256 Posted June 19, 2011 Report Share Posted June 19, 2011 (edited) what always used to work well for us was 22mm halibut pellet but by far the most exciting is a livebait fished about ten inch under the surface. Thought they were bottom feeders no i have caught many cats just under the surface like this mate of mine had a 17ib cat with a 20mm smokey mackeral boilie popped up 6foot off the bottom on a zig rig,they will regularly leave the bottom and come up to feed they seem to take quite a variety of baits offered on what are deemed mainly carp waters guessing they get used to feeding on whats going in,also seen them caught on couple grains plastic corn popped up a few inches with plenty of trout/halibut pellett over the top Edited June 19, 2011 by watchman Quote Link to post
neilnbeanie 10 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Share Posted June 20, 2011 What i would do mate is find out exactly what other species are in the lake, then you need to decide if you dont mind catching some of these in between or not. If you only want cats, I would go for, fresh pigs liver, squid, leeches (buy online) or live or deadbait (Pike?) if allowed. If you dont mind other fish in between i would go for big lumps of luncheon meat, fishy boilies, 22mm halibut pellets (soak them in oil 1st) and bunches of lobworms. As a rule of thumb the hotter the weather, the higher up in the water they tend to feed, on really hot summer nights i have seen them crashing about on the surface taking chicks and ducks. They all seem to love trout pellet so its a good idea to fish your bait over them as a sort of groundbait. Good luck mate, if you need any more information let me know, remember to use good strong hooks and plenty of good line, your going to need it ATB, Neil. thanks for that advise neil, ive never fished for them. the lake is 3/4 football pitch size and an island in the middle. the ONLY other fish are crussian carp. what bait SHOULD i have the best chance?? neilnbeanie 10 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Share Posted June 20, 2011 I put two wells catfish in a pond i dug for my lad to fish 15years ago so i knew where he was i have never seem them come out to this day and a couple of his mates have tried i know they are there as i stocked them personally how big do the grow and how quick the pond is about 1/2 acre in size Mark They grow pretty fast mate, specially if there is a lot of prey fish for them to feed on or there is lots of anglers puttting bait in.I know that the bigger fish (thirty plus) can easliy put on 10lb a year, ive seen that happen and i wouldnt mind betting they could do more, given the chance. Personally i would prebait an area with a bait that is cheap and readily available for a couple of weeks then give it a go for a few days. They are funny feeders though, you can go days without a run, then they seem to go mad and all switch on together and everyone can be catching them all round the lake. Ive had a few occaisions when i havent had a run for a couple of days and then ive had a fish on and another rod has gone off. ATB. Neil. Quote Link to post

Live Crucian Carp thought about the dead bait crucian, the lake is brimming with the things. taking a load away for dead baits as it is but would like to hook one of the catfish. Quote Link to post
