specktacular007 2
If someone tells you they have never had a dog fail either they are lying or they haven't been digging dogs long....The question is what do you do when one does fail?....I know what I do if they don't do the job. grafter-man 43
well mate, depends on what you mean by fail?? I have had terriers that couldn't fit through the complete tunnel to make it to the stop end, (too big to fit) dug to them screaming and digging, attempting to reach their quarry. But if they failed by coming out of earth, walking away from game, etc they ended up as backfill. What exactly do mean by "failed"??? Quote Link to post
snowman 37
i mean puting a dog in after another dog and aving a result ? Quote Link to post
mudd dog 128
each too there own. to be honest i've seen a few dogs and bitches down the years that havn't (failed) from the day they were run on. few and far between may i add. IMO there's a lot off different ways a terrier can FAIL. for example: if you have a dog thats a big lump of a terrier. yet you dig to that dog regularly without fail !!! maybe, someday your invited to go out with lads beating cover with hounds...... the hounds put one to ground under pressure in a tight bank full off rabbit burrows...... if you fancy dropping your big dog in them tight tubes and getting a result !!!! from my experience your dog will fail....either that or the field will end up like swish cheese :11: different dogs for different situations !!!!!! does that mean your dog failed, or you failed your dog??? either way the answer to your question as you already know is NO, there's not to many lads will say there dogs failed. simply because most off them are bullshitting arseholes. i've run on young dogs that have failed over and over when young, though i knew at the time they just were not ready to go. them same dogs eventually learned there job and have ended up doing us proud down the years. you have to crawl before you walk..... 3 Quote Link to post
hack 301
imo the only time a young dog can fail is if it gets up to quarry gets bit comes out and wont go back for me thats the end for that dog but a dog that carnt get to its quarry but wants to because of size etc this is just a case of the dog needing to learn to dig on but as mud dog has ready said dont put a big dog in a tight place but anybody who says they have never bred or had a dog thats failed is talking bollocks can tell you know had my fair share Quote Link to post
THE DEALER! 77
have had a few dogs fail me that were quite good one time, just shows how resilient the good ones are. Quote Link to post
OldNog 432
not had mine walk off the job when shes been up to the quarry. I ug a rabbit with her when she was very young, also dug to her tryng her best to dig on. When she was younger she would run round in circles in biggger places trying to find anything which got a it annoying. But these things aint failing in my eyes, just showing keenness. There were times aswell that she didnt even want to look twice at places that id have put money on holding game but had to trut her nose. She has come on well now and is a nice steady bitch and very rarely gets knocked about and last season i even dug to her after another dog had had enough of the quarry. That was a good day Quote Link to post

cantona 310
had a dog start well then started coming away about 14 months old, that was at the end of my season, i kept him and used him following season when he was about 2 and he always stayed unless a bolt , i think some may seem ready but are not so sometimes giving them more time works Quote Link to post

Has it never failed to find in a large spot? Has it ever let its quarry past it? Has it ever let its quarry boss it about the earth? Have you ever had to sink more than one hole to it? Has it never let the quarry dig away and you could not get to it? If so what age is said dog and how much has it done? I think it all depends on what you call failure. Some people have higher standards than others. Terriers can come unstuck for a multitude of reasons, and not all the time it is entirely their fault. A terrier that can graft a lifetime without allowing the above to happen is stuff of fairytales. FTB Quote Link to post
