Guys,

I am new to what I would term modern airgunning with its huge variety of very capable airguns, in fact I have never had an air rifle with a decent (not micky mouse) scope on it. I have occasionally come across references to LEUPOLD scopes. These scopes seem to be prettyy pricey, say compared to a similar spec Hawke scope for example. Are they really so good that paying four or five times the price of Hawke scope is worthwhile?

Thanks in advance

Graeme

You spend your money and you takes your choice. Yes they are that good but not much use on an airgun, mate.

The quality and build on something like that is beautiful. If you had one and say something like a Hawke next to each other, you'd see why they are so much expensive. A bit like a Timex watch next to an Omega.

However.... They are mostly built for full-bore guns and so are designed to used at far longer langes than we shoot at. The focus will be piss poor at close range and the paralax tends to be set at 100 yards minimum so as good as they are, they're not much use to us

Cheers.

Hi Mate,

Ive looked through Leupolds, Scmidt and Benders, and other expensive glass. To be honest I dont think the difference is that massive between them and the mid range scopes. I currently use the Hawke TAC30 for HFT. Purchased it second hand for £175 , and for that price the sight picture is fantastic. If you want good glass for an air rifle, the £300 mark is more than enough. MTC, Hawke, Edgar Brothers all make antastic scopes.

Mikey, unless you've used the expensive scopes right at the extremes of performance, i.e. the last two or three minutes of light at the end of the day, then you won't appreciate the difference. An expensive scope can buy you 5 minutes extra shooting time when light levels drop, and that is priceless when it comes to grassing that massive buck.

As someone says above, for your average air rifle hunter, the scope isn't that important, and spending £1000 plus on a scope is a waste of money.
