I think the simple answer to this one is, get the best you can afford and you're comfortable with.

 

I've had the same Lee Enfield .308 for over twenty five years and it was a .303 before then.

 

Try and keep to the same ammo once you find you're happy with; I've used Winchester Super-X in .308 .22 & .22-250 for over twenty five years now, it works for me.

 

Good scope mounts are more important as the scope; and you can run into £1000's for a great scope.

 

That should be all your pocket money spent.
