shushycatcher 219
When you have decided what breeding you want, and you look at the litter of say nine pups, what is it that makes you pick the one for you? But not when they are 8 weeks and ready to go,when they are a week old and you have to pick or miss out on your pup! Is it just colour and hope for the best or is there more to it? atb shushy Quote Link to post

If he was good breeder he (wouldnt) ask you to pick till then. But with most lurchers unless 2 breeds, you not really sure how they will turn out physically. To me the most important thing is temp in a puppy, i try to go for a bold pup who is friendly. Not one that slinks at the back or hangs back . go for temp Quote Link to post
3 Turns 326
I AGREE WITH SCOT/H. ONES THAT ARE MORE ALERT AND ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO BE DOMINANT/FIGHTING/ BOYSTEROUS Quote Link to post

collie/grey 238
I prefer the pup in the middle. I like a confident pup but not a bossy/boisterous one and i like a pup that is more interested in me rather than the other pups, and i like a chilled out temperament but not a nervous/unsure one, colour comes into it but i couldn't pick a pup at a week old out of a litter, i have to go by temp first then shape/body proportions then colour Oh and i don't like a vocal pup Quote Link to post
iceman001979 1,316
You also need a good bit off luck Quote Link to post
BIGLURKS 874
well just recentley i got two pups from the same litter picked the 2nd biggest dog they had the bicth that was the runt of the litter and so far the runt seems too be the better dog she has more brains faster and natrual talent so i think its a bit of pick of the draw as long as there healthey looking Quote Link to post
fieldsman 51
Close your eyes put out your hand and pick one up thats the best dog of the bunch.Until they get to an age where they are running there is no way you can tell which dog will be the better one I,v had dogs at a year old and made a mental note of which one I like then at 15 months have had to change my mind, depending on the breed of dog a lot can change from 8 to 18 months and colour isnt usually the determining factor. It is impossible to choose the best dog in the litter at a week old its just luck if they are from good dogs the chances are better of getting a good pup but nothing is certain. 1 Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
theres always the old argument that the biggest pups get everything their own way early in life whereas the smallest ( i dont like the term runt) has to fight for everything from the first suckle onwards and tries harder and learns quicker because of this. Guest born to run1083
Picking a pup at week old is luck to what your getting. Even picking at 8 weeks old is still lucky in my view but obviously you have to just go with your gut feeling but like what bird said at 1 week old there's no way to even atempt to pick as they don't have there own personalities or anything, can't walk or anything so got nothing to base an opinion or gut feeling on. tsteve9999 456
Sometime the pup picks the owner That's exactly what happened with me, my dog was the one that showed most interest in me from the the litter when I sat with them. It's worked out well for me and if the time ever comes when I am after another pup I'd do the same thing. 1 Quote Link to post
