best age to give a rat to a pup

Recommended Posts

ive two patterdale lakeland pups 7months old now. just wondering whats the best age to give them a few rats

im going to assume for legalitys sake that you are talking of bringing them ratting, perhaps with an experienced dog NOT giving them a caged rat.

anytime now would be good enough. depends on the pup though really

i agree with the above but the norm is wait for adult teeth to come through and be through good then go with a local group if you can find some 1 to take you and see how it goes from there atb and enjoy

I have a 7 month old patterdale and she was given a dead squirrel at about 5 month (the one in my avatar)and by the time she was 6 month she was out rattin and catchin rats herself.

Its down to the individual dog and how they mature, you don't want to be giving them rats if you don't think that they will be able to take a bite or two as it might put them off  Now shoud be spot on though!

Good luck with them mate!

Totally depends on the dog mate. I had a cracking border/lakeland 20 years ago who showed little interest in rats or anything for that matter until he was 3 years old. He always had a glint in his eye tho so I let him tag along in the hope he would go one day - and when he did go he bloody well did go and never looked back. He was a brilliant wee dog done the lot with him. On the other hand a son of his killed a mink at 8 months old...all depends on the dog. You should know if he's ready. Good luck!!!
