:hmm: Tom; Why do You need to take these buggers out, mate? Only 'Need' suggests it's an obligation. A paid job. And, if ye taking on Contracts, ye shouldn't need to be asking in fora how to do ye job. I'd like to see this clarrified, just out of curiosity.

That said; Cages or Conibears up trees. Coni's by far best because they're cheap and hide better. Dead squirrels don't make a fuss. Personally, I'd pin a small notice beneath such a trap, warning of it's existance and saying not to tamper.

Cages up trees where dog walkers are present :icon_eek: I can just see the front page of the local rag, with a photo of some numbskull dogooder with his fingers through the cage and a very angry live squirrel attached to the end of his digit

Trouble is with conibears is that they are not 100% effective at killing EVERY time.

I know its an expensive way out the problem, but personaly i would go with the Kania.

or alternativly , you could make some fenn sized bird nest boxes , fixed up the tree ,make sure the fenns are fixed inside the boxes , so any squirrel caught cannot get away with the trap, not like one local muppet near me,if you make the box so a fenn fits tight in the bottom and the hole is well up the top , a squirrel will put almost its full weight on the plate , resulting in a good clean catch, feed with wheat til the squirrels get used to going in , then set your fenns in em, joe public thinks there bird boxes, just make sure they are well up the trees accessed only by a ladder B)

" Small notice beneath - trap ". I was referring to something the size of a playing card, directly beneath a Coni set. Idea being, anyone already intent on getting That close can't say they had no warning what was about to happen to their hand. Obviously I wasn't saying place a billboard beneath each tree

'Fish; That's why I hinted " Dead squirrels don't make a fuss " ;) Obviously, Kania's are the Trades stock answer. But, at over thirty quid a throw, I can't see Tom the question asker having a few laying around. Can you?

I like Moleys idea. I'd just be wary about accidentals on Starlings, especially as they're just about to come looking for just such places to nest.

What ever; I'd label it. Just like our Rodent Boxes. Think COSHH.

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM MATE WITH TRAPPING SQUIRRELS CLOSE TO WHERE PEOPLE WALK,I HAVE PUT TRAPS FOR SQUIRRELS UP IN TREES CLOSE TO WHERE PEOPKLE WALK BUT LIKE EVERYONE SAIS YOU GOT TO BE CAREFUL,I HAVE HAD TO WALK AROUND THE TREE AFTER PLACING THE TRAP AND MAKE SURE I CANT SEE IT AND IT IS COVERED FROM VIEW,ALSO WHEN CHECKING YOUR TRAPS IT CAN BE DODGY,WITH ME IT ON PERMISSION BUT WHEN SOMEONE SEES A GROWN MAN CLIMBING UP A TREE THEY EITHER THINK YOU MENTALLY RETARED OR UP TO NO GOOD,I HAVE ALWAYS CHECKED MY TRAPS VERY EARLY AT FIRST LIGHT OR LAST LIGHT WHEN IT GETTING DARK,I HAVE HAD GOOD RESULTS IN TRAPPING SQUIRRELS UP TREES AND QUITE OFTEN ON SOME FARMS I TRAP ON I PUT THEM SO FAR UP A TREE TO STOP SHEEP FROM NOSING AROUND THE TRAP AND SETTING IT OFF,ALSO BLCKBIRDS ARE A RIGHT NUICANSE WITH LIVECATCH TRAPS AND I HAVE FOUND FROM EXPERIENCE THAT WHEN SET UP A TREE I DONT CATCH TO MANY BLACKBIRDS AS I DO WHEN SET ON FLOOR,THE NEST BOX IS A GOOD IDEA AND I HAVE ON SOME FARMS PUT THEM UP JUST FOR SQUIRRELS TO GO IN,IT MAKES IT EASIER WHEN I DREY POKING AS I SET THE BOXES UP WITH A SMALL TACK THAT I CAN PLACE SQUIRREL PURSE NETS ON BEFORE I GIVE THE BOX A TAP WITH MY DREYPOKING POLES OR A STICK,GOOD LUCK ON THE SQUIRRELS MATE

All great points. Over here in the US, we mount a board on a "L" bracket and set the cage trap on it. A wire goes through it a is screwed into the tree to hold it in place as well as the bracket is attached to the tree with a cordless drill and wood screws. These are put on with a ladder so out of reach of the public. I use a Black Walnut or Hazelnut bait put in an old sardine or cat food tin and put it in the 8x8 15 wire cage trap. The bait being oily will shead a good bit of rain if "cocked at a 45 angle" , although I often put a cover over it when expecting a heavy rainfall. Well, just one trappers take on it. (Best season: 707 squirrels in 200 days)
