dadioles 68 Posted June 7, 2011 Report Share Posted June 7, 2011 hi how often should i clean the barrel of my 17 hmr? Opinions vary from "almost never" to "every time you use it". Personally I use a bore guide, rod and patches quite frequently, maybe every 100 rounds or whatever mood I am in. A lot of muck comes out of the moderator as well. It only takes me a couple of shots to settle it down again after a clean. Others will say that it can take them 20 or more shots to settle down, maybe their bores are slightly more pitted or possibly not totally clean or maybe just different.... My aim is to keep the barrel in "as new" condition, nicely polished inside as the result of pumping bullets through it but with clear rifling not clogged up with deposits as the rifling is extremely shallow. I only use a bronze brush very rarely (once a year?) just patches, solvents and oil. Quote Link to post

Hi, I know I shouldn't answer a question with a question but how often would you clean a .22, Hornet, .17REM etc, etc etc, after every time you use it of course. I can't understand the opinion that one should leave it for 10 or 20 or however many shots. A clean barrel will last a lot longer than a dirty one and a non pitted barrel should be more accurate than a pitted one. I use a bore snake after each outing on the .17s because I believe it's more important to look after the condition of the rifling in the barrel. Quote Link to post

Sometimes when l used meths soaked cotton wads my rifle was still spot on the zero after cleaning, sometimes not but other factors could have been the reason for this. cheers Callum Quote Link to post
