rabbitpoacher 20
Get a well bred whippet less injury prone more stick longer working life. Totally agree with you mate, although you do have to be careful which lines you get. For example,I wouldn't work a non ped racing whippet as they are far too fast and brittle they weigh approx 20% less than the same sized kc whippet. Afterall a average paced dog with a little between the ears will always catch more than a pocket rocket thats as thick as they come. Vixen my ped whippet rarely gets into top gear when out lamping she uses her head only running as fast as she needs to to keep up with the rabbits timing her strike and she rarely has to strike twice. have you got any pups available Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Whippets are a lot of fun, hearts like lions, noses like a bloodhound. However would not be first choice for a lamp dog. They come into their own in the daytime though Especially ferreting and bushing Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
I suppose it all depends on what sort of haul you are after, when I was snaring, netting, and ferreting, I also used to lamp my Beddy X Whippet, and half a dozen on the lamp was fine by me. If you were after big numbers on the lamp, then im sure some of the other crosses would suit. Quote Link to post

On many occasions I.v caught 20 plus with 1 Whippet and on a couple of nights more than 50 with 2 .In this area a 20 plus night with any dog is a good night. Many lads I know in this area think ten is a good night they are few and far between. In cover crops like sprouts bigger dogs struggle to get on terms with them .I know differant dogs suite differant ground but a whippet deffinitely has a lot to offer when rabbits are your target.A Whippet that I lost just after xmas was without doubt one of the best dogs I ever owned she put many saluki x from good lines to shame on big land and caulfield himself witnessed her doing 4 x4 and said she was a one off. This little dog is the only dog that I have shed a tear over and is sadly missed .She died lamping she ran a rabbit behind some cover and unknown to me there was a roe she got a grip of it and was dragged on to the road and hit by a car.I,m probably bias when it comes to Whippets,I own bigger dogs but always take a Whippet out with me they can do things other dogs can,t you have to own one to appreciate them I,v been lucky to own a fantastic one so much so I bred again to try and replace the one I lost if I fail at least I,v got the memories of the one I lost Quote Link to post
