dadioles 68
I am a professional photographer and spend much of my time editing digital images. A few things to be aware of.... Oh and never change or overwrite your original image - think of it as your "negative", the master copy. You never know when you might need to go back to it. Get your head around the concept of - pixels / dots / resolution / image size - it is all the same thing (more or less) and really pretty important. To make a nice print (on paper) that looks like a proper photo where you cannot see the dots you need to print at about 300 dots per inch so a typical postcard size print (5" x 7") would have a size in dots of about 1500 dots x 2100. A monitor (tv) has much lower resolution and even a huge "hdtv" with 50" screen has a total dot count of only 1080 x 540. So basically if you want to view a photo full screen on a big tv you need the photo to have a resolution of 1080 x 540 (pixels or dots - same thing in this context). What I am getting at is that you need to be aware of the "end use" of a photo. If you want to make a print it needs to have an appropriately high resolution. If you just want to view the photo on a screen, especially if it is to be sent over the internet, the file size needs to be as small as possible so that it transfers quickly and there is no point in sending more dots or pixels than the screen size of the viewer. These days even cheap and simple digital cameras (and phones) can take quite high resolution pictures. That can be handy for cropping and editing but it does make for large file sizes, the need for more memory and more powerful computers to handle the increased file sizes. Given that the largest tv's only display 1080 x 540 dots, there is no point in sending an image that is only going to be viewed on such a screen (not printed) with any more dots than that. My high resolution computer monitor displays 1920 x 1080 dots. jpg is a compressed format and cleverly reduces the file size by sampling an image. There are different levels of compression. The image becomes degraded but it is surprising how much you can compress an image before it becomes too noticeable. In summary.... If you are going to send a photo over the internet give some thought as to the final use and the size of the file that you are sending. Try using your photo editing software to crop the photo and save it with an appropriate number of pixels or dots. Save it as a jpg with an appropriate amount of compression, again to keep the file size small. The photo's posted here by blackfox and zx10mike look really nice and are 1024 x 768 pixels with a file size around 300K Edited June 6, 2011 by dadioles Quote Link to post
