Ideation 8,216
A stag hound is basiclly a shaggy (not always) greyhound bred down from the dogs that went over from britain a long long time ago. Like a grey hound, but with much much much better feet and stamina. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
It's the Americans and Australians who call large, usually rough coated lurchers staghounds, presumably because they were bred down from the original deerhounds which went abroad when those countries were first colonized, which were of course used for deer: hence the stag bit of the name. 1 Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,106
There has allways been confusion here in the U.K. as to what a "Staghound" is. Here they are, (usually) a big type of Foxhound, used for hunting Red Deer, there was, (and possibly still are). a couple of Staghound packs down in the south. The Staghound abroad; Australia, New Zealand, America, South Africa, etc, is usualy a Deerhound/Greyhound hybrid; of course there are many other breeds crossed into these lines, and an "offshoot" is the American Coyote Hound; still basically Deer/Grey but bred from the best to the best, and probably has far more than just Deer/Grey in its make up. The Aussies I know consider my 1st cross Deer/Grey a "Stag", but I just call her a Deer X. An English Staghound; An Aussie Staghound; Cheers. 3 Quote Link to post
