How is this done; who buys the rats?

Historically I believe that lads used to buy live rats from the ratcatcher to try their dogs on, and also have a competition on killing rats dog vs dog.

I think in the 'olden' days' (one for you then Ditch ) there was some kind of government incentive plan for killing rats which some people made a career of. You took your sack full of tails down to the local cop shop or council building and got paid per tail.

 

Now-a-days you could earn a few quid selling them to the locak chinkey for 'sweet n' sour' chicken balls.

i thought that the first time i tried them,but my wife makes such a nice stew with them you sort of get a taste for it we have it every other week,very under estimated source of protien.just skin them gut them add all the best cuts of meat put in youre carrots onions ,water and stock simmer for about five hours,put some dumpling mix on top for the last twenty mins.and serve.

Nothing intrinsically wrong with rat meat. Their flesh is ok. It's the organs and - obviously - urine ye have to watch out for.

 

Take care in their preperation and they're just rodents. Hedgehogs and hares have been known to carry Weils Disease, after all.
