I would agree it is an honour and a privelege to be asked to be a Judge. My husband John Mc Stay has judged Whippets at Donemana and Dunsilly, and he was so proud tobe asked to do so.John judges the dog and not the person, and in his own words, it is his way of giving back something to the dog shows for all the enjoyment we have got from them over this many years, to many to mention. We have had many very sad times in our married life, through sickness, ill health and knocks in life generally, and only for the dog shows and our faithful whippets and lurchers, and our many good friends in the Canine world as an outlet and something to look forward to at the end of a very dark tunnell,we probably would have went under. When Mr Cancer knocks on your door, you look at life differently. Somebody on this forum a few nights ago called John a cross dresser, because he took the whippet from me after I won the ladies handling class in Florencecourt and showed it for me in the final. If that gentleman only new the reason behind that he may not of been so quick to make fun of the situation. I was a cancer sufferer, and sometimes my back gives up as a result of 5 major operations and sometimes John has to take over from me in the shows.I love showing my dogs , but occasionally life dictates to me, and I have to obey it.This was one of those times.I am so glad to be alive and thank god for every day I live on this earth.Without Johns help and kindness to me,I could not of got through it. A smiling face can hide a lifetime.

So please stop knocking these good people on this forum, who give up their time to organise and work tirelessley to try and make these shows a roaring success. If you have nothing good to say about them, then say nothing at all.So many families just live for these shows, the photographs and the memories and the pride of seeing their dogs winning, whether they hunt or not,it doesent matter. It doesent say on the advertisement sheet "Dont come if your dog doesent hunt". Think sometime how much heartache you can cause people with these hurtful comments.Follow the example of these good people and many many more who are willing to give up their time (Tango and Milliken for example)to make your day enjoyable. Wake up and smell the roses, and see the good in people for a change because life can change so quick, beleive me from one who has been down that road..

Well said Margaret. My wife had a rule in our house that my boys could not say anything about each other unless it was something nice. It has stood them in good stead. Unfortunately she found I was beyond redemption!

Dog showing can bring out the worst in people with petty bickering. I stopped showing my golden retrievers after having a huge bit of success at the all Ireland Golden Retriever Club Championship Show when my puppy won three classes; my older dog two classes ( including the top one) and my bitch the Green Star Bitch and Best in Show. My wife who wasn't present said that I must have been thrilled to win at the top show in Ireland - I said that because of the petty jealousy shown I wasn't going to show seriously again. Oh and by the way for all those who talk about 'show ponies' all three dogs could work as well. The bitch who won BIS ( she was also 3rd at Crufts in the Open Bitch Class) won gundog tests, ran in trials and was used for shooting regularly; the open dog had his gundog qualifier and the puppy was a test winner the last dog in Ireland to get his qualifier actually running in a trial.

It has been my personal pleasure since I took an interest in this forum to meet people like you Margaret and your husband who take a genuine interest in your dogs and get a lot of pleasure from them.

I now have purely working bred dogs which I show occassionally at club shows - I don't expect to beat the show bred dogs ( although I have occassionally) but I don't expect judges to change the rules or their opinions to suit my dogs. Dog shows are beauty contests - it is up to working terrier and lurcher owners who work their dogs to come up with other ideas to test the working ability of their dogs at events much like we run gundog tests. These are now commonplace but for those of you who can remember back to when I started the fairs were hardly heard of.

Tango came up with one way of testing the ability of the owners of working dogs - great contest but where were all the guys who talk about 'show ponies'? With similar creativity it should not be impossible to produce terrier working tests.

Margaret/John if the shows give you pleasure keep enjoying them!

Take no notice of these sad people Margaret, it's so easy to hide behind a keyboard and spout tripe, you and John are great folk who insult or offend no one, if there were more people like you the shows would be nicer places!

John & Margaret ,Take no notice of the comments made by F.P,as everyone is aware of the insults he has been directing

at some people recently (me included). But dont let him deter you both in doing what you's enjoy doing as you both support shows up & down the country year in year out and all shows need good genuine people like you's .

you have to be thick skinned to judge shows -- just do your best and judge whats in front of you .. do it fairly give each dog the same amount of time even if its shite the owners paid for you to judge it properly ..if i`ve had 2 dogs that i struggle to split i explain why i have -- ask all the right questions - set yourself a routine and stick to it take as much time as you need -- dont be rushed switch off from whats going on outside the ring -- dont be influenced by comments from outside the ring --- heard it all before the black uns the best in here ..i always send the ones i dont want out the ring with a thank you ..dont judge mates dogs none of mine will show under me or me them ...i always dress smartly shirt n tie i think it sets you apart .. always remember what you`ve judged in case they come up again in a differant class i had it once when i put a russell pup in any type of puppy 4-6 months i came 2nd behind another russell the very next class any age russell pup up to 12 months i won it and beat the dog that had just beat me .. it happens when thrs a lot of classes ... if anyones unsure about judgeing first time try and get in the ring with an experianced judge or judge a couple of child handling classes .. watch the judge at a couple of shows and see thr style -- and dont knock it till you`ve tried it .. first time i judged i done 20 fags and had 3 vists to the loo before the show had started ... give it go

well said stig good post. and margeret there are some people in life that were born to moan and cause aggro for the sake of it and over the years the shows seem to have more than their share why people cannot take it for what it was intended a fun day out and enjoy it win or lose .a day to enjoy meeting up with new and old freinds that you may only see in the summer and the craic of like minded people . instead of moaning at just about everything .good health for the future and enjoy your lurchers in whatever you choose to do with them .at the end of the day you payed for them you feed them and you clean up after them so do whatever you enjoy doing with them .there rant over lol.

I am abit confussed with this bit. IF you won the lady handling class why should John take over It was you that won in the handling class not John regardless of sex it is the person that wins not the dog You have called this the final Do you mean the best in show
