Hi

Despite enquiring on numerous occasions to various sources including the Police and letters to the editor of 'The Countryman's Weekly' - who fobbed me off by saying he would not get involved in legal matters, when the paper is full of advertisements for quite obviously illegal items..

So the paper will sell you an illegal item and take the revenue from advertisers, but not give its readers advice as to what is legal or illegal. Amazing.

I am fed up that no one will put their head on the block and give me a straight and unequivocal answer to the questions below:

What is the max legal blade length of a pocket knife - pen knife?

Is it legal to carry a fixed blade - Sheath Knife?

If so what is the max legal length of blade.

Best regards,

Romany Juckle

The length for a non locking pocket knife is under 3 inches, anything else is illegal unless you can prove a valid reason, hunting is only a valid reason if your on permission. Even if you are on your way to your permission and you stop at the shop it's illegal to have it with you in the shop.

The law regarding carrying a knife relates to being in a public place. If you are on permission you could carry whatever you wanted. I believe the knife size for a public place was reduced to 1 inch but too drunk to bother googling it.

The law is this

You can carry a slipjoint knife (no locking blade) with a blade length of no more than 3 inches, This can be carried at any time (I take mine everywhere)

This is classed as "every day carry" in the knife world .This sort of thing http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/-UK-Legal-Carry-Knives/c-1-92-641/

If you can show good reason, you can carry ant type of knife, When ferreting, I carry a billhook approx 20 inches long, for nettles etc.

I also carry a clipper for general work. The main thing is being able to show good reason.

If on your way to hunt, you are entitled to have it with you,, but leave in the car to go to the shops etc.

If leaving a knife in the car when not going hunting,,MAKE SURE IT IS LOCKED IN THE BOOT !! your car is a public place so you cant have a knife etc without good reason,, but the boot of your car IS NOT a public place so thats where to lock your knife.

Hope this helps. Don`t be scared to carry a knife,, I have one with me permanantly. If you don`t get into trouble you will have no worries,

Hmmm not sure,, but me myself, wouldn`t risk it,,cops are funny buggers at the best of times, and it only takes one, not got his sensible head on ,or just coming the c**t and you get charged,

Bottom line is your car is a public place,,but the boot of your car is not,,better safe etc

Now that I feel the answer has been suitably answered, going back to the original post. Exactly what does the Countryman's magazine sell that is "obviously illegal"?

Mike

Exactly they are only illegal to carry in a public place. If you were going hunting and you popped into tesco with your shotgun then it would cause problems but if were on permission with it then you would have a problem providing you have a the appropriate licensing.

It's all about common sense.

i carry a knife on me a lot of the time, on permission, on my neighbours farms, in the tractor, on the family farm etc

try to remember to put it away (not on my person) when i go into town. couple of times ive forgot and nipped into my local for a pint, luckily they know me and i ask them to put it in a safe place in the back room for security/legal reasons.
