tango 221 Posted June 4, 2011 Report Share Posted June 4, 2011 there has been alot of talk this week on the judging at shows in the noth and south of ireland by the members on here.as a few of you will know i run a show a few weeks ago and have done so over the last 3 years.judges are very hard to get as they know the hassle it is to stand all day and then get stick when they give their opinion.so here is the chance for all the huntinglife dog experts make yourself known on this post or message me and youll get your chance in lurchers whippets and terriers anyone who sends a message to me does it in confidence.young or old male or female i dont care let me know.its youre experience im after not who you are.good luck kieran 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

scent 509 Posted June 4, 2011 Report Share Posted June 4, 2011 i judged the lurchers 2 year ago for the minerock harriers ,day went very well but i felt under serious pressure and wouldn judge a show again .Its very easy to come on here and slate judges over this and that but would the same lads that do all the slating step up and be the judge ?????? neil cooney 10,416 Posted June 4, 2011 Report Share Posted June 4, 2011 (edited) I've judged terriers five or six times at shows, lurchers twice and the wheaten class at Tandragee. I've not had one person come up to my face and tell me I haven't a clue. I've had snide remarks said about me and probably a million bad words said behind my back. I've always thought that if a show organiser thought enough of me to ask me to judge then the least I could do was have the manners to say yes, if I hadn't nothing on on that day. I've also thought it manners to do my best on the day. IMO most folk who'd judge a show wouldn't loose one wink of sleep over the bad loosers. Also to add, Ihave no intention of judging anymore shows 'till I'm old and retired, LOL. Edited to add, so Tango keep up the good work. Whats said on here is only a drop in the ocean and if your honest with folk you'll get honest judges. And even then you'll have show folk moaning, LOL. The Experience of the judges 2. The fact judges don't put working dogs up and 3. Bias in judging. 1. Experience in judging - how are judges to get experience if they don't get to judge. Long experience in a breed does not necessarily mean that a judge is competent but it is likely to help. 2. Shows are a beauty contest where conformation, condition,physical fit for purpose etc are all on which a judge can assess a dog in the show ring. They cannot assess a dog's working ability. A heavily marked dog need not necessarily be a good worker - in fact one could argue the reverse. I have fun occasionally showing my working dogs against show dogs BUT I don't expect to win. There are working classes and if I was showing terriers or lurchers my objective would be to win thess classes and have a crack at the Champion title but I wouldn't expect to win it under most judges. To satisfy guys desire to compete with their working dogs at shows - we could upgrade this class prize ( perhaps at least split it between dogs & bitches) and/or we can produce something analagous to a gundog working test. 3. All judges are biased to some degree in terms of the type of dog that they like. In the final analysis when I am judging people know I favour the old real gold golden retriever with a wavy coat over the more modern cream straight coated type. But to get to me exerting my bias or preference in a close decision the two dogs have to have good conformation, good hard condition and good free movement. If the cream one is better for these then it goes up. When someone judges all they are doing is giving THEIR opinion. Yours might be different but does that make them a cheat? poacherslad22 122 Posted June 5, 2011 Report Share Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) Some good points there Albert ,as Judging is not for everyone, having judged at Tullylish & Dublin Working Terrier Club's shows i have to admit i really enjoyed the experience of judging at these shows and as Neill Cooney says it's a privelige to be ask, and its also good manners to accept when approached by show organisers to stand in the ring and put yourself in the possible line of fire,but at the end of the day we are all in this sport to enjoy and therefore should all support each individual who takes up this privilege and plays their part in promoting all the great shows we have throughout the summer months..
