EskdaleHawks 8
Buzzards can hover, seen it quite few times, same technique as the kestrel . Seconded! They don't need a slope either. They do use the same technique as the kestrel. The speed of the wing beats depends on the speed of the wind. Little airflow or Slow wind speed = fast, deep wing beats, because the bird has to work hard to stay aloft and the angle of the body steepens to almost 90* to the wind, in a strong wing speed there is hardly any wing movement and the angle of the body is more horizontal. Tiercel 6,986
Mal, I passed one hovering today, it was hovering above a piece of rough land abouit 20 yards off the road. What really got my attention was its legs, they were down and the talons were gripped into a ball. It was hovering just like a Kestrel with its tail wide open and very short rapid wingbeats (rapid for a Buzzard that is)There was not a lot of wind 15MPH if that, but it was facing into the wind. I could not stop and watch it as I was in a line of traffic, pity as I would have loved to see the outcome. TC Quote Link to post

TC Thinking about the buzzard after I posted last night, the bird was only about 20 foot off the ground and as it's talons were clenched I was wondering it it had had a go at something and it had got away and the bird was still looking for it? Just a thought. TC Quote Link to post
watchman 256
well it seems someone may have talked this up for me cant believe i saw it for the first time today while sitting in traffic down in gosport hants,i was watching it gliding above a tree when it started hovering looked like the body was almost vertical with the tail tucked right up under it, only hovered for about 5 seconds before dropping behind the tree out of sight certainly a fist for me but well spotted Edited June 14, 2011 by watchman Quote Link to post
