Patterdale problem

Recommended Posts

I had the same problem & was at my wits end with my black dog who at 11 months wanted to attack anything. I threw him in at the deep end & his first dig was 2 & half hours which was hard going for us. He shone that day & although steadied up alot with regular work always had to be watched around dogs/livestock. Had a few good seasons out of him but the dog still never had as much work as he needed due to other dogs. In the end he was PTS after mauling a labrador. My opinion would be to PTS unless you have the work for him or place him with someone experienced who knows what they're taking on. Dogs like these are/can be a liability

Thats good advice john! you learn to understand terriers over the years, working terriers are all different they all have there ways and often the quiet ones make the best workers.

All the best with him MM..

Mate with all due respect i totally disagree.......too many people only let their dogs out when the hunt is on....of course its going to be kill on the mind! They are dogs irrespective of breed, gender and nature...they all work off the same cog's.....its up to the owners to re-act responsibly....otherwise things dont go accordingly!!

Put in the effort and you will reap the rewards!thumbs.gif

Mate, my dog was aggressive throughout the season aswell as the summer. He was a constant pain in the arse, my russell only had to look at him & he'd lock on. If I only kept one dog at the time fair enough but dogs like him cause problems. No matter how good a worker he was I'd have never bred from him as I think it would've been irresponsible breeding from an animal with his temperament. The fact is I knew my dog better than anyone else as I'd had him since a pup but it wasn't a difficult decision in the end. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses & start again, knowing what I do now I would've have done it a long time ago JMO

Good advice, Keeping a dog with that temperament is a waste of time.

If the dog can not be trusted in the field with other dogs or stock, it is a liability.

Too many dogs are being kept in City kennels that would not survive kenneled with a pack of hounds.

IMO The old hunt terrier temperament is being lost with the breeding of this type.

I think it is a fault that usually came from the Bullx being brought in. Fantastically game dogs but sometimes no control

The dog gets tunnel vision, it wants to kill everything in sight.

It is not prey drive. It is not hunting anything.

You will have to Find the earths (quarry).

You will have to bring the dog on a leash to the entrance of the earth and pop him in every time.

Pray he does not come out the far side of the earth and attack stock in a field or another dog tied up away from the dig.

The owner of the legend "Smithy" seemingly found out he worked "single handed" after he killed another dog that was to ground with him.

It might have been better had that owner sent the dog to be kenneled with a pack of hounds for a week.

When he called back he could have collected the dogs collar or what was left of it.

If you can not get the dog to change and I hope you do.

Accept that he is has that fault until you bring on a better dog

or make the decision to have him PTS.

I would not pass him on to anyone else in case they breed from him.

The trouble is the breeding, And people who leve there dogs in the kennel until they are old enough to start work, If the time is put into them from 8 weeks old, such as introducing them to stock and other dogs you are half way there.

Hi everyone, this is my first post, i woull like some advise from more experienced guys.

I have 2 year old dog & bitch patterdale terriers. She is soft & well behaved..The dogis also well behaved, likes to run off when he gets the scent of anything, but always comes back after a couple of min. My problem is he sees other dogs as prey, small or big, no barking just stright in with the teeth. I think its just male dogs. I have to sort it before he kills one. Do you think he needs vasectomy????

thanks for any ideas

i think your dog needs to see plenty of work in the field he will then know wat it's all about
