Patterdale problem

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, this is my first post, i woull like some advise from more experienced guys.

I have 2 year old dog & bitch patterdale terriers. She is soft & well behaved..The dogis also well behaved, likes to run off when he gets the scent of anything, but always comes back after a couple of min. My problem is he sees other dogs as prey, small or big, no barking just stright in with the teeth. I think its just male dogs. I have to sort it before he kills one. Do you think he needs vasectomy????

thanks for any ideas

Hello, castration not vasectomy, may help but I'm afraid it's down to you to make sure he doesn't get the chance.

Does he work with other dogs? if not he needs socializing, may be a bit late for that though, although it will help.

Good luck.

If its only male dogs he attacks then he's not seeing them as prey: but as competition for his bitch, or simply because he wasn't properly socialised or a mixture of both. At his age castration might dim the problem down a bit, and will defo not get rid of his attitude. It is now fixed in him. Only solution is to not let off lead when likely to meet other dogs. Do the responsible thing; get him castrated anyway, which at least will get rid of the testosterone which will increase his problem, and keep him on a lead if there is the tiniest chance you might meet another dog.

Ye get him on a lead mate. I know a few lads who have got/have had dogs like that and it doesn't have to be anythin in particular that starts it off either.

If you like him and he works well them keep him on a lead when your out. If not, bye bye. It's a right pain in the arse when your out for a day with a dog like that.

Good luck though mate

Why's your Mrs not happy? It's funny how often 'the Mrs' isn't happy in the lurcher/terrier world? I'd get that sorted out mate - then deal with the dog?

Thanks for all your good advise. Regarding live stock, this was when he first kicked off, a ran half a mile to attack a ram. after that hes been on the lead. I am strict with him when hw tries to go for another dog. It just spolis a good day out with the dogs.

Just like to say thanks again.

Mate had a dog exact same, small black pat, wanted to take on the world, attacked every other male dog within seeing distance....guy i bought him from just couldn't handle him!

I took him home, let him settle in in his own pen, next couple of days let him run about with muzzle on!

then over the next few days introduced him to the rest of the dogs, with muzzle of course, every time he launched an attack he got nailed by both the dogs and me!!!! And i mean a really good message sent home, the only alpha round here is me!!!!!

Continued this for the next few weeks, every now and again removing muzzle, any reaction out of him, the slaps and muzzle back on, he soon knew the craic!

Now he is one of my most best behaved dogs....any signs of violence i raise my voice and he lie's down!

But always remember....no matter how well you think you know the dog....even if he like an extra limb...."NEVER, EVER, TRUST A TERRIER".

But before you get him snipped, try this first because he could turn out to be the best dog you ever owned!thumbs.gif
