Shazza 52
Are you absolutely sure he hasn't eaten anything he shouldn't have? Just that what you describe is exactly the same as my staffy showed last year, totally baffled me until he passed a little bit of plastic and it turned out to be a carrier bag i had no idea he'd gotten hold of (maybe blew over the fence). He had all the same tests including X-rays & ultrasound, blood tests the lot and all came back clear. Soon as i found out what he'd eaten i rushed him back to the vets but they wouldn't believe me and refused to open him up because the 'tests' were clear I took him to another vet and explained, they agreed the 1st vet was right (they stick together) so i went to a 3rd vet and didn't tell them he'd been seen twice already as i wanted an honest consultation but i did tell them about him passing bits of carrier bag, i let them repeat the tests, same results, they also refused to open him up to remove a blockage as they didn't believe there was one and my dog died Really hope you find the problem mate, ATB with him. Shazza 52
Hopefully things will look up now yours is eating a little. Maybe it was just a reaction to something like a bite or sting making him feel really bad. I'm sure the barium would have pointed out any blockage, pity mine wasn't offered that. Fingers crossed he continues to improve and is soon back to his old self

maitland93 13
A was talking tp the vet yesterday and we were onabout the heart and he says salukis greyhounds etc at rest have a very slow heart rate and there have been put on medacation by vets who didnt know this because they thought there was a problem with the heart
sandymere 8,263
From a layman’s perspective. If the dog is passing stools it’s a good sign, if there’s a blockage that would soon stop. 4 days of not eating/drinking would cause deranged bloods to show dehydration. Infection would also have shown if it was present and you could ask if the white cells where raised, if not the altered liver function is interesting as poisoning would be high on my list of possibilities. As a general rule of thumb the fitter the dog/human the lower the resting pulse. This is complicated by thing like heart block but that would show up on an ECG. Puppies/children will have a higher pulse. Pain, dehydration, infection will all increase the pulse so a slow healthy heart rate is usually a good sign. Hope its on the mend. ol26 2
its odd, he seems to be getting better slowly which is the main thing - he's eating a bit, little and often and he has drunk some meat juice and very watered down milk - still not drinking water though. it just doesnt add up... been a worrying week though here his is looking a bit healthier, a few weeks back! sandymere 8,263
Positive signs, i'd leave the milk out, perhaps some Dioralyte http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000800.html. Edited June 3, 2011 by sandymere
Cold Ethyl 63
his ecg showed his heart was healthy, just slow - having had a drip for 24hr that should have helped with the dehydration, so whats confusing is why is it slowing - do you know what your dogs resting heart rate is roughly? A dog of mine had this and i was really confused but seemingly according to a specialist that salukis are prone to it as someones said already didbnt make any differance to him tbh he was a picky eater as well and fussy with it and struggled to keep weight on and if he lost any it took weeks to get it back on etc.If the dog is otherwise well i wouldnt worry
Cold Ethyl 63
Try canine water i got given this in cartons for Zack dont ask me why they like it so much but they do.Its full of vitamins etc and a pep up for a dog thats sick old or in whelp etc.Dont know how diff it is to normal water but it works.Milk id skip as it could well be making him feel sick

Just tested mine (Saluki)it's 54 bpm and he's chilled out all day, however he is 2years old, the good news is as you mentioned he is starting to eat and drink a bit more, atb with him
ol26 2
thanks all, the good news is he still seems to be getting better slowly - bit more interested in food, hes keeping it down now but still not drinking water - he just seems knackered - not supprising though after what hes been through. he's geting some fluids though very wet food. vets still have no idea, noticed he has started dribbling from his mouth when he's asleep - thats new...???? Meerihunter 7
Four Salukis here and their heart resting rates are within the 44-50 range. Has your vet done a Thyroid test, Salukis can be prone to thyroid problems (so I've heard anyway). Lovely looking hound, hope he is back to full health soon.
