salukis resting heart rate - or other running dogs

Recommended Posts

hi all, was wondering if anyone could help. our saluki pup has been really unwell over the last week and the vets have no idea whats up with him. he has has xrays, bloods, liver tests, ECG, the lot. and nothing seems to be 'wrong' with him, but he didnt eat or drink for 3-4 days, was sick and ended up on a drip and 48 hours in the vets. a week ago he was running round fit as anything. - no sign of infection, poisoning, obstruction....

one thing they did pick up though was he had a very low heart rate - does anyone know what a salukis resting heartbeat should be - or if you have one could you take it and let me know.

ill put a full post on here of whats been going on, but its a bit of a long story!

its been a bad week...

salukis are known to have big hearts big heart beat slower than small ones but pump more blood . some very inbred lines suffer from cardiomiopathy very inlarged hearts ,sometimes it kills them sometimes it never affects them !!!.

as been said eirlier it sounds like dehydration ,,but i aint a vet so just a guess ;)

his ecg showed his heart was healthy, just slow - having had a drip for 24hr that should have helped with the dehydration, so whats confusing is why is it slowing - do you know what your dogs resting heart rate is roughly?

normally dehydration would cause increased heart rate- effectively there is less blood and the bloods thicker - harder to pump and therefore the heart has to work harder and beat more. also he seems to be dribbling more which goes agains dehydration too - its odd, the vets are completely confused, but one things for sure the dog aint well..

sorry i have no idea and it would depend on different factors ,age fittness, weight, and so on

ive heard it said at rest somewhere between 25...50 bpm but i wouldnt be sure of that.

very true - would male sense, though seems so low - having said that lance armstrong had a resting heartbeat of 32bmp - about half the average human. not saying my dog would win the tour d'france but he'd give it a go if he was well!!

maybe im being thick here - maybe it was 60 because he was dehydrated, and its dropped down to a more 'normal' though low level as he has become more hydrated.. i dont know!

did the vet say he was dehydrated? well he must have thought so to put the dog on a drip if the pups skin is not elastic and returnes chances are he is/ was dehydrated ,but bottom line is if you are not happy go to another vet for a second oppinion ;)

might be the way to go - but when the tests dont say anything, it difficult to agrue they might be wrong. its so odd.. cant find anything similar on the net, vets dont know - staying up to keep an eye on him tonight.. will give the vets another grilling tomorrow, and maybe think about another - its worth a shot. cheers mate

funny you should say that - i asked the vet that, or if it was something simple like toothache! all they can say is they are ruling things out with the tests they have done that came back negative - they even tested for something called addisons disease.. he has just eaten and drank a bit, better than nothing!
