ol26 2 Posted June 2, 2011 Report Share Posted June 2, 2011 hi all, was wondering if anyone could help. our saluki pup has been really unwell over the last week and the vets have no idea whats up with him. he has has xrays, bloods, liver tests, ECG, the lot. and nothing seems to be 'wrong' with him, but he didnt eat or drink for 3-4 days, was sick and ended up on a drip and 48 hours in the vets. a week ago he was running round fit as anything. - no sign of infection, poisoning, obstruction.... one thing they did pick up though was he had a very low heart rate - does anyone know what a salukis resting heartbeat should be - or if you have one could you take it and let me know. ill put a full post on here of whats been going on, but its a bit of a long story! its been a bad week... ol26 2 Posted June 2, 2011 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2011 he has been off his food for a while, but just started eating a bit, but the vets took it at 60bpm, then went down to 40 yesterday at the vets and is now at home and its between 32 and 38....?? riohog 5,750 Posted June 2, 2011 Report Share Posted June 2, 2011 salukis are known to have big hearts big heart beat slower than small ones but pump more blood . some very inbred lines suffer from cardiomiopathy very inlarged hearts ,sometimes it kills them sometimes it never affects them !!!. as been said eirlier it sounds like dehydration ,,but i aint a vet so just a guess Quote Link to post Share on other sites
ol26 2 Posted June 2, 2011 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2011 his ecg showed his heart was healthy, just slow - having had a drip for 24hr that should have helped with the dehydration, so whats confusing is why is it slowing - do you know what your dogs resting heart rate is roughly? ol26 2 Posted June 2, 2011 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2011 normally dehydration would cause increased heart rate- effectively there is less blood and the bloods thicker - harder to pump and therefore the heart has to work harder and beat more. also he seems to be dribbling more which goes agains dehydration too - its odd, the vets are completely confused, but one things for sure the dog aint well..
