picky eaters

Recommended Posts

i dont ever leave grub out for the dogs,no matter if you feed once or twice a day mine clear their bowls immediately, nothing worse than a dog picking at grub left out on a daily basis if you ask me,not only that probably pick all day then eat their fill just before your wanting a night out.

i know a few lads that leave bowls of dry food out throughout the day but even if im bringing on a pup it gets fed when i say and if it doent eat it i remove the grub there and then just seems to work for me and encourages good feeding i believe, not saying i dont leave bones out thats different so do any of you leave grub out and if so just wondered why,ok slightly different if you got a litter of pups running about the place all day whilst weaning but other than that?

I put the bowls down for 20 mins and they don't eat then that's their problem. It teaches them quite quickly not to be fussy. My dogs will literally eat whatever I put in their bowls. Was annoying the day my fags fell in one of the dog bowls though

If I am taking the dogs out to work I usually give them a small feed mid morning so they have some energy when they go out at midnight. Then they get their main feed once they get back.

a hungry dog is a responsive dog,,i dont leave food down,,i believe a lot of good traits piggyback on hunger, more eager, easier motivated, etc,,it causes a want in a dog makes it keener to work with , takes my take on it bud, best of luck with the new upstart,,

ive had the odd spoilt picky eater at my place, usually that has changed after a week or 2, i feed the picky eater first, if after 15mins the dog hasnt eaten it all i hold the picky eater back and let a gannet of a dog in to eat its dinner in front of it, the picky eater soon learns if it doesnt eat its dinner someone else will, this is all done under controlled conditions and has worked well for me over the years. no need to fuss over the picky eater trying to persuade it to eat, round my house there are no such luxurys

IMO people who leave food down all the time are either lazy, or ignorant and don't know how a dogs digestive system works. Even out of season when my dogs aren't actually working, I feed once a day after exercise in the evening. If its a pup (under 10-12 months) then I feed breakfast to it then evening meal as usual. Only very occasionally do I feed adult dogs in the morning, and then only if they need to put on some weight. Not the case with any of mine:  they scoff their grub down in under 5 minutes, and eat anything I put down for them, which is 99% raw anyway.

Dogs are designed to work on an empty stomach, eat a good meal then go to sleep. I wouldn't like to work a dog that has been picking at food all day: puts too much stress on the system even if its stomach isn't stuffed to the brim. Food left down all day also makes any food reward based training a non starter.

Great post....

I feed my dogs once a day and there heads never leave the bowl....if they do its a clear indication that something may be up with one oif them.

I have looked after a dog that has food all day....within 3 days it learned to keep its head in the bowl..............

Poor or picky feeders wind me up no end and give me an instant dislike to the dog.If it continues to be fussy I would normally starve it for a day or two depending and this normally resolves the issue.Failing that the dog would need to be really exceptional on the sod to compensate or else we end up parting company.Cant fathom picky eaters especially if you can see the dog is hungry and needs abit of weight on it,spose cause Im a plate clearer myself no matter the size of the plate :D
