THE GRIFF 8
We went out with the ferrets yesterday. We were having a good day doing a small holding for a lady that is over run with rabbits, until we did the last warren. It was only about 15 holes but was spread out at the point of a river bank so was quite large. We were working it for a good half an hour with 3 ferrets and no rabbits were showing, no rumbling or nothing. When the last ferret popped out I noticed it was covered in blood around it's neck, i presumed she had a kill down the hole, but when I looked closely she had a cut on her neck. The rabbits were being stubbon all day due to the time of year and I presumedshe had maybe been kicked by a backed up rabbit. Then I checked the others and found a cut on another Jill, this one was on her neck going under her front leg. I gave them both a jab of antibiotic when I got home and the cuts look better today after they have cleaned themselves up. The cuts are barely noticeable now but it's got me thinking. Could it of been a backed up rabbit of could it of been a stoat !! Ps; please don't turn this into a ' you shouldn't of been ferreting this time of year' thread. We were helping out a lady with a small holding, the grazing has been hard enough this year with the weather so 30 rabbits might of knocked a small hole in the population for her. Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
Sounds like rats by a river bank Quote Link to post
THE GRIFF 8
Sounds like rats by a river bank Possibly, but didnt see any rats bolt and the warren had a couple of freshly dug holes, dug by rabbits. The river is only about 10 feet wide in the middle of the Yorkshire dales. The lady said there used to be mink around there but hasn't seen any for about 10 years. Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
My bet would be rats given the location. Could be mink given the location as well, but you would probably have more than cuts, same with a stoat, i would think. I fecking HATE rats. Quote Link to post

THE GRIFF 8
Could've been one of these. I might have to start taking a metal detector with me ferreting in future to scan the ground for knives before putting the ferrets down. Quote Link to post
