New permission

Recommended Posts

My wife works at a stables and offered my services to clear the rabbits. This happens a fair bit and can sometimes be a pain in the arse but at other times can result in more land so i always go with an open mind. Having met the farmer and been given a map of the farm we agreed that i start with the paddocks over the Summer with a view to access to the rest of the farm in the season.

I went for a preliminary look the other night and the rabbit problem is out of control. The rabbits are tame as you like and in great numbers. It was supposed to be a recon as much as anything but i ended up shooting twenty and could have had loads more. I stopped because i dont have the freezer space and wont throw game away. They were so easy it was almost distasteful, just walk to 40 yards and shoot off the bipod, it felt very wrong to be honest almost like shooting livestock. Does anyone else feel this way when they are so clueless?

I usually only shoot for the pot or dogfood at this time of year but access to the rest of the land this season depends on taking numbers. I'll be going back this week but i have to say im not really looking forward to it.

No, maybe I should just be a bit more hard hearted. I like to hunt for sport rather than pest control, dont get much enjoyment out of sniping tame rabbits. Has to be done though, part of the deal pest control for permission. I'd just feel better about it if it could have been done outside the breeding season.

I shouldnt think they'll stay stupid for long though!

I have a permission that's like that does feel wrong prefer to work a bit harder for my bag. Needs must though so don't feel too bad. Just think of it as once your fully established there they'll get more twitchy then the sport really begins all the best with the new permission Kev

The butchers i sell to only want them from october onwards, they reckon theres not much market for them in the summer. Im not really sure why, unless people eat more stews over winter. They reckon they sell most to eastern europeans so maybe they only want them wintertime for some reason?

I'll get through them, one of our dogs is gluten intolerant and eats two a day and they others get them when theres a surplus. I eat them myself but not as often as i used to. The ferrets gets through a few but i've got them on biscuit now as the flies are a pain in the arse with meat in the court.

I was up there today, not shooting just giving a hand with the horses. Still as daft as, walked up to one 10 yards away and it was still grazing away oblivious. They will soon wise up though once a few have been shot.
