millsy44 72
As you boys know i recently bought a Daystate Air ranger in 177 from a bloke in coventry (3 hours drive to get it ) The second i saw the gun i loved it and couldnt wait to get out in the field with it, It was going to be topped with an 4x16x50 IR MTC Viper, previously owned by bill aka sweeney off here, he sold it to my shooting buddy and then i got my mitts on it The next day smoggyadam and myself are on the way to one of our farms (the new one) zero session on the morning and were happy, right lets go and hit some rabbits!! As you might of read in my previous post, i had a complete shocker, Apart from a 15 yard mixy dispatch i was awful I decided to put the gun away as i couldnt guarentee my quarry a clean kill, and just spot for adam, but he wasnt much better and was also trying a new bit of kit for the first time, his new hawke scope. "nah, lets leave it today mate and get to the range on saturday" All the way home and that night i was cursing the gun and scope, but in the back of my mind i knew the kit wasnt to blame, it was me!! Saturday came and a full tin of pellets through each gun and we were getting pellet tin lid size groupings out to 70 yards and pound size groups at 25/30/35/40 and 45 yards, The Air ranger put that pellet exactly where i wanted it to go, proving the previous days shocker was nothing but me!! Today adam couldnt make it for the time i wanted to go, so he got left at home and it was just me and the ranger, A solo bonding session lol I got to the permission at 12 noon, and the wind was howling!! but abit of good news, as i noticed the fields have been cut and the rabbits were now on our side of the boundary 5 Minutes in and i spot my first victim, a half grown at 60 yards, 60 yards in this wind was too far, so time to snake crawl to a closer range, i got to 40ish yards and he was looking twitchy, (when we were at the range i wrote my mildots down with what yards they were, put it on the computer and printed it out, laminated it and taped it to the sunshade on the viper) So a quick look at the print and i got my holdover reference, slowed my breathing and thwack, pellet hit slightly high but it was an instant kill This wind is pissing me off now, so i made my way to the managed woodland down in the valley, Thats better, and straight away im presented with a rabbit at + yards, down on my belly and i start to crawl, 25 minutes later and im about 30 yards away (and full of b*****d nettle stings) The rabbits facing away from me so i sit and watch, waiting for him to turn for me it seems like ages before he does, but eventually i get my shot and Thwack......number 2 in the bag A colared dove is next, sat on top of a conifer tree about 20 yards, Thwack and hes tumbling to the floor Pellet hit abit low, neck area I leave the dove where it fell and tuck up in some bushes and not 40 seconds later a sharp eyed rook is feasting on the dove, not for long Thwack rook goes down with a shot through the eye, 2 more close range rabbits follow an hour later and im done, hard work carrying 10.5lbs of rifle all day and dont you hate it when your dying for a drink and youve left it in the car and its 100degrees when you get to it lol I sent adam the photos on my phone and hes gutted he couldnt make it , just goes to show that its not easy changing GUN,SCOPE AND CALIBRE and expecting to be a success straight away without getting a day on the range to familiarise Needless to say im in love with the air ranger now and ill be keeping this one for a while Atb peter Quote Link to post

I always shot Springers in .22 but have now changed to .177 in my HW 97 kt and when my Rapid arrives this week it is also in .177., So more Range time is for me again !!!!!!!. Regards Daz. pianoman 3,587
Nice one Peter. There you go mate, you just need to spend a bit of time "shooting yourself in" with a new rifle as you get used to it's characteristics. They don't always shoot so well with you straight out the box. Looking forward to reading about your hunting successes with it all! All the best. Simon Quote Link to post
