i just got 3 chooks of a neighbour about 2 months old,does anyone know how i can make sure they are all hens and not cocks? ng.I just don't want to hear a crowin when I just want to hear a clucking.

Before the moult you can usually tell (depending upon breed) by the combs.

The cockerels will be redder and larger than the pullets...

These chicks are younger than yours.

 

 

Wish i hadn't gone to photo these for you, discovered i have a load of cock birds :doh:

when the young birds moult the neck and rump feathers on cocks are pointed at the tip and pullets are round. hope this helps ya pal.................steve

 

Thats a very good method most of the time, to see the feather tips clearly some people get a square of white card and hold it behind the feathers. Unfortunately it is not so good for breeds with unusual feathers like Silkies.
