Have dogs improved over the years

Recommended Posts

to me the dogs getting bred mostly for money today and not for their pot filling abilites i started in late 1980s and the dogs then where in my opinion were more bred to work their chossen game but now dogs being put together as its the latest craze and nowa days you see the bullx and saluki type back then it was the deerhound x and collie cross things can only get worse with the ban as people leave the sport or turn into armchair poachers and breeders of poor or no ability dogs together for the sake of money their are still some good dogmen who breed to fill pot and cotinue their strain of dogs them the ones you want dogs off

I'd say about 99% of the dogs being bred today are'nt a patch on the stuff being bred in the 70's and 's,if anyone kept a lurcher back then it was purely for work,I don't remember anybody keeping them

in theory dogs should be improving over the years as breeding between proven worker to worker should be producing good working stock. you keep breeding from the best you should be getting better quali

personally i think no to much shit being bred by to many part timers the best dogs, imo, were the dogs that HAD to catch to feed their owners and themselves and nowadays a dog like that is just not

Some lines will have got better, but the 'average' standard of working lurchers will have dropped most likely. But the 'best' dogs now will be better than the 'best' dogs of the past.

THATS A BOLD STATEMENT MATE ,TO ME A GOOD DOG TEN TWENTY YEARS AGO ISNT ANY WORSE OR BETTER THAN A GOOD DOG TODAY .WAS ALI BETTER THAN TYSON?SAME THING MATE DIFFERENT TIMES SAME HARE.

No mate, but no one was selectively breeding boxers were they. That's the point. If you had a good line 20 years ago, and you have been breeding best to best and working at improving your line, then theoretically you should have better dogs the longer time progresses. The average standard will have dropped due to an increase in popularity. Just my thoughts mate.

I HEAR WHAT YOUR SAYING .THE THING IS THE AVERAGE LURCHER HAS AND ALWAYS WILL OUTNUMBER A RIGHT GOOD DOG 1000-1.TO KEEP A GOOD LINE GOING ANY LENGHTH OF TIME TAKES SOME DOING WITH ALL THE SHIT WAITEING TO JUMP ON IT AND FK IT

Very true mate.

I'm just guessing that if it was some way possible to line up all the dogs EVERYWHERE, the best one you found now, would perform better than the best one from the past.

But you are right, there is a lot of shit out there.

ANd you may be right that the 'peak' of some of these lines has long gone, and we are just grasping onto the remnants.

Other than coursing that is.

you might get the odd one as good. The trouble is most of todays dogs are pamepred shit bred from pampered shit.

Dogs from the past where given the status of top dogs on merit.Very rarely was a dog bigged up to sell pups, they sold themselves on merit!

Years ago if a dog was good only those in that clique got to know about it........these days Billy and his mate get together and create a "internet Legend" post a Walter Mitty type thread and there it starts.30,000 members on here and 10% believe it and theres another 3000 to spread the word, and so on and so on.

Theres good dogs around today whether they're being tested like in the past, what with the ban and a increase in people lamping etc is debatable.Yes food etc as improved but raw meat was still raw meat 20-30 years ago.

Being honest I'm only in my 20's so not really old enough to comment. But it goes to show most the older generation of hunters I know keep there own lines and have done for years and when they do breed they don't need to advertise as all pups are called for but. I think in lurcher world now there's alot of luck involved you might have something decent you might of caught the short straw you never know but from all the oldies ive ever spoke to said in the past the success rate was alot higher in dogs that would make it and the fail rate massively lower

As has already been touched upon i'd be intrested to know if the internet has been detrimental to the working dog? Now folk can turn a dog into a legend where as in the past it would of been witnessed working to make a reputation no it only takes Cedric in his mums pantry with her laptop and a few school chums and its the next rin tin tin, just a thought.........

just my own view on todays dog but how can they have improved when the prices for dogs as gone through the roof and lot of dogs now being bred just because they are the breed of the moment and not on the parents working ability 20 years ago the hunting scene was working dog to working dog and you got better dogs at working mans prices now its the in thing to have latest fashion type and people not botherd about bloodlines thinking its got to work as everyone got them dogs back then were hardy and would take more nights out on the lamp these days they pampered and lot driven on fields tossed out when game been rallyed all over and dogs only have to make quick dash and its allover yes their will still be the good dogs about but for how long also the show scene is adding to the working dogs down fall as some are bred now show winner to show winner and showing dont fill your freezers

I know exactly what you mean, I know of a few litters that weren't advertised but the pups were sold purely on the word of mouth. Where a few lads knew the dogs and advised a few newbies to have a pup etc. Etc. And they all seem ok.

Like the litter ill hopefully being breeding next year will not be advertised on here as there will only be 4-5 pups that will be given to a few selected lads that have seen both parents work. Should they ever wish to get rid the pups will have to be either culled or replaced in another selected home.
