Hunting hares in orchards

Recommended Posts

I've lost 2 dogs running rabbits through woods, both where bought as adults and therefore had probably only run in open fields. I do the same as Whin getting them out in the woods tripping over logs branches and ditches etc as pups. I've never hunting with whippets so I don't how well they are suited too hunting in woods, I hunt with full saluki's these days as find their running style and good feet keep them out of trouble. I would say that 75% of my hunting is done in woods and on rough ground.

woodland hunting takes adiffrent type of dog ,lana my collie crosss her father were great woodland dogs ,thye would kill game unassisted single handed , rabbits hares roe phesis ,they hunted more like a wolf than arunning dog very clever they would tail a roe keep on him steady and when they got a bit of a clearing they would go up the gears and try to catch them they no how to run deer runs how to sit tight when ferreting listen for movement , only saw one other dog hunt like that m c glenns danny another great woodland dog , ,ive walked woods at night silent popping phesis off, all the dogs even some of the saluks ive kept could hunt a wood out , the sniper jade cross ran with luke from a babe he was tireless took sika in the big forest along the borders and stirling shire great times ,when i think of all the good dogs ive had should have bred more rather than scrambling to get agood line back all the best

I didn't know running dogs were so prone to injuring themselves. Anyone who hasn't lost a dog from trees? lol. This is my first time owning and hunting with a sight hound. I have only had shepherds and herding dogs before this such as a german shepherd, kelpies and cattle dogs. The cattle dog proved to be a good bush dog but lacked speed needed to catch alot of things. I think a whippet/cattle dog cross would be good.

I hunt my Stags in the scrub all the time. but they also have done so since they were pups I have got to say they do ajust their speed in the scrub saving burst of speed for open patches. It might be different in an orchard though where the grass is short and the could see the game all the time though. Its a shame we dont have bowling greens to hunt on over here.

yeah my whippets are used to the bush as well. I walk them through the bush everyday but they haven't really pursued anything through the bush before. Our yard is also full of trees and when chasing each other they run around those and seem to avoid hitting any. They use the trees to try and lose the other dog chasing them. But our yard is also a familiar environment to them and they most likely memorise where all the obstacles are. It would be different in the field i suppose. Unless i'm sure that they can manage to negotiate the trees and wont run into a tree trunk i wont be hunting them there. Their safety is my first priority and from what others are saying it seems to be risky. I'll just have to find a better property with nice open grass and no trees.
