If gameness is having a 'fighting spirit', especially in the face of difficult odds.   Could a lurcher not be game??? Depending on the situation you put it in? I would say it could.   Obviously no

i notice alot of people use what i feel is the wrong word, e.g when people say an untried, unstarted pup is game. so im putting what i feel is the definition of them.

Prey drive - the want to catch someth, for example crashing a hedge to make a catch

Gameness - knowing that the fox is going to bite them but still catching it

Hardness - inflicting damage to a fox and take more damage then required e.g some bull crosses catch and just hold the same place having extensive damage done to then rather then quickly changing hold or shaking

all dogs have drive to some degree, its the want in our dogs to make contact with something,,but all dog do not have the same drive intensity , some dogs will be shocked out of drive with the bite of a fox, some will see it as a positive and respond accordingly,,its that varying degree of intensity of drive is what makes dogs hard or not, its all the one drive but different dogs have different levels, like an elevator in a tall building some dogs will go ,right to the top and enjoy the ride and see everything as positive and some will bale out on the 2 floor , because its all getting to much,,

Don't mistake a dog that can smash something half its weight as game.

I would imagine if you said to somebody who matched dogs in the pit "my lurcher is game" you'd be laughed at.

I would be very surprised if any lurchers in this country were given the oppertunity to proove they were game I think this word is wrongly used all too often when describeing lurchers .....

Earth dogs can be game .....but gameness cannot be described it can only be seen

Obviously not as 'game' as a pitbull or other fighting breed, but still game. Perhaps 'game' in comparison to other running dogs.

For example i would say a small beddy x, who threw itself into a fox, fearless to the stick it was going to take, was pretty game, more game than a big 90lb bullx who did the same.

If that makes sense.

Have to agree with johney.boy,a lurcher that kills fox's even consistainly is not what i would call game.Just look at the size and weight difference whereas when 2 dogs were pitted to fight they were matched to within a couple of lb and the same with game fowl they are matched to within a couple of ounces of each other, and they will fight to the finish.I know all that was many year ago now,but they were both bred for gameness alone and nothing else. The lurcher is the same as a greyhound, bred to chase and catch but are very seldom over matched usualy the oppisite.

Prey Drive.....an overwhelming desire to persue/hunt chosen quarry

Harness....the ability to keep taking stick even to the point of exhaustion

Gameness...imo not to be used a term except in the presence of bull dogs or game fowl

just my opinion on it folks
