ive broken all mine,by starting off walking past sheep and cattle, give them a long lead.if they look like they want to chase, pull them in short lead say "NO",do this for a few days, then walk him through the field applying the same procedure.he will soon pick up you dont want hom chasing cattle/sheep.once you think he is ready off with his lead and walk him through the field.by then mine are normally pretty good at basic commands.cpl weeks you be sorted  having said that ive seen some animals that no matter what you did were just out and out killers lol domestic animals sheep everything was fair game lol

Aye, not being funny but first how does the dog act on a lead? If he is pulling, correct him and do this for a good while. If he seems uninterested you can try sooner, but i'd still test him about them, walking up and getting them to run, and in different situations from 300 sheep, to one, and lambs. Taking time now is better than needing to shoot your dog later, it's the summer, you got the time.

Good time for stock breaking. Fields full of sheep and plenty young lambs - keep it on the lead and if it shows interest a sharp yank/reprimand. Do this for several days on the trot and then let it off the lead or put it onto a longer lead and repeat the verbal 'No' 'Leave' or whatever works for you. Do this for several days. Then I get the sheep running away from me - herd a few into a corner or up against a wall and get them running - watch the dog and repeat the verbal command. If he's been taking it all in he'll not notice them. But if it's an ears pricked job and he's looking like he's for the off get him back on the lead and start again. Then try with horses/cattle etc. Good luck.

Stock training a dog is not hard. But, different stock take different methods. The object of the training is to get the dog to see stock as he would see trees, ie; totally ignore them. The dog knows that they are there, and it must pay them as much attention as he does to the trees, they are just part of the landscape.

To do that, the dogs must be familiar with the animals, neither fear or covert the animals. One good way of training a dog to stock is first get them to ignore other dogs, when walking on the leash as a start and loose as they progress. All the above advice will sereve to do that job and untill you can get your dog to ignore other dogs, trying it with stock will only lead to failure, which in turn leads to frustration in both the owner and the dog.

I just re-read the post and your right it is rubbish. ( That will teach me to post after a night on the cider) What it should have stated was, that if you can get a dog to ignore other dogs before you start stock training it, your job will be a lot easier.

The principles are the same and if it does go tits up then there is no livestock to be harmed.
