Depends what hit and miss means. A lot of bad dogs are down to the owner so it's a hard one. When you mean unproven do you mean unworked? I'd use neither to be honest

if you were planning to breed your bitch which dog would you choose,a proven dog from a line with alot of hit and miss on producing workers or a unproven dog from a line that produces workers? cheers

 

I would use an unproven dog if it was a dog from your own line that you did not want to lose
