Big Jim101 29
Im hearing alot of good things about pure working whippets at the moment but do they actually stand up to 1/2 and 3/4 whippets crosses at taking rabbits, both day and night? are they not plagued by bad feet and thin coats? smithwicks 182
it depends on what the whippet cross is crossed with really. but yeah i would say they do stand up to whippet crosses, just me own oppinion Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
I now have a Whippet Pup, but to soon to say, but in the past worked Whippet X Beddy, Whippet X beddy X Whippet, and Beddy x greyhound, worked these Dogs hard, never had one foot problem. Quote Link to post
stoaty 171
Same as Joe I had whippet collies that ran boulders rocks and rubble believe me I'm a whippet fan but they'd of gotten smashed to bits on this kind of ground Stoaty Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
'Better' - a nonsense term that should be avoided. A good whippet will be 'better' than a shitty whippet x, and vice versa. And what does 'better' mean anyway, catch more??? Dogs are individuals. Whippets have great feet as a rule. But pretty thin skin. In comparison to a beddy x, i would say, feet just as good, faster initial speed, more stamina over certain distances, and comparable stamina over a night, coat/skin in general much poorer. mighty celt 996
who ever told you whippets have bad feet are talking complete shite they have better feet then most lurchers yes some whippets do suffer from having fine skin and coats but not all whippets.a good whippet is a hard dog 2 beat at rabbiting for any cross. 2 Quote Link to post
Big Jim101 29
cheers for the info guys, ive had my doubts about whippets for a long time but i just keep hearing good things about them! i was also worried about some of the smaller whippets, around 19tts being a bit small for the job. Im guna try and find someone to go out with who has a pure whip to see for myself and if its proved to me theyre as good as some people say, who knows, might even get 1 myself in a few years¬! Stanleigh 135
I,v ran whippets and/or whippet cross,s for years ,I can,t honestly remember ever having a problem with feet , and I only have the same amount of cuts and tears thatmy mates have with thier lurchers , comparisons are pointless , highly recomend either. bird 9,983
good post, ive had a (none ped) whippet bitch she was 20in 20lb little grey+white dog. She was brill rabbiting in the day (mooching) and good in the lamp, never had any probs with any feet. But i will say they dont handle the wet+cold weather very good. If say ferreting, they can get cold if there no action on top, and if a wet cold jan night they will feel it lamping.I like whippets great dogs ped or none ped, but there do need a thick coat for the jobs ive said.I dont like beddys, so maybe lakie or jack 1/4 might help with this If you could get just bit thicker coat on a whippet, you wouldnt need nothing else Quote Link to post

HAMMERDAN 25
I own a Bullwhip x JRT 20'' tts and my friend has a pure whippet, when slipped together theres a difference in take off but after 4-5 seconds and a turn my x is kneck and kneck, i wouldnt knock a pure or a cross because the ones ive been out with have been upto scratch, my x has bigger ans tighter feet but thats just the bull in him, also where the coats involved my dog is wirey haired but neither dog shivers nor looks under the weather when out in cold and wet conditions so i cant comment on that matter, i dont prefer either because both have there pros and cons, but then again which dog doesnt? blan89 159
ive never owned a pure whippet or even seen a pure one work, but surely a dog that is very lightly built has thin skin and is very fast cant be as durable as most lurchers which are slower off the mark thicker skinned coated and sturdier built? i could well be wrong here btw,it just seems to make sense. Ideation 8,216
The only down sides i see in my whippet is sometimes his prey drive is too high, and his balls too big. That, and when he rips, he peels like an orange. As my mate said, "it's like a body builder wearing a tight vest, when it rips, it REALLY rips". But for me, he makes it up with a fantastic nose, HUGE prey drive, and a desire to 'hunt' like no dog i have seen. 2 Quote Link to post
