BUGGER YER BAN

Two years ago today the hunting act 2004 came into force. That day was a statement of intent, and since then hunting has proved far more resilient and resourceful than its opponents, and even many supporters, ever imagined. Support for hunts remains solid and the infrastructure of hunting - staff, hounds, kennels - remains intact...... Only one huntsman, Tony Wright, has been successfully prosecuted under the Act and this verdict is being appealed. The vast majority of hunts have adapted with determination and inventiveness. They have been rewarded with levels of support equal to or higher than before the Hunting Act came into force.

The political and media obsession with hunting, especially fox hunting, remains a challenge but it has also been a huge opportunity. It is hard to think of any other campaign that has the draw of opening meets or Boxing Day from which to deliver a message.

Realistically, however, repeal will not be delivered until the make up of Parliament is significantly changed, and the next General Election could be at least two and probably three years away. The temptation might be to dig in, close ranks and await a more sensible Government, but nothing could be more dangerous. We must remember the lessons of the past and continue to promote both hunting and, crucially, the case for repeal.

How did you spend your day, i was fishing personly!
