SEAN3513 7
give it a good rub with wd40 with a piece of tin foil, then wipe clean with a clean cloth..........see how it looks. re blueing is never a great success if you do it yourself Quote Link to post
Mazing 9
This is how I do it. I use fine 000 grade wire wool for removing the rust off the gun with some gun oil, WD40 will be fine. The idea is to remove the rust without damaging the surrounding blueing. Hopefully the rust will be just on the surface and hasn't pitted. Next I degrease the area. I use turpentine but white spirit would be fine, you could instead smear washing up liquid over it and wipe clean with a damp cloth instead of using solvent(just make sure it's dry). I've even know fingerprint oil leave a mark if not removed. I then rub the blueing solution over the metal with a lint free cloth. Try to put it on as even as you can. It should change colour to black after a while. Work a small area at a time, about 2". Then dip a fresh bit of cloth into the blueing and do the next section. Try not to get black (reacted) blueing back in the bottle. When it's been covered, a milky white film should develop over it. Dip a clean rag into some oil and cover it in a generous layer to neutralise the blueing reaction, check to make sure you didn't miss anywhere. Normally on the bottle of blueing it says to use water. I find doing that leaves streaks/patches. I get better results with oil. Leave it a whole day. It might have developed a fine light brown dust. Wipe this off and give it another coating of oil. I leave this for another day and then wipe clean. Good luck! Quote Link to post
Mazing 9
I forgot to add to make sure you wear some latex gloves or something. Gun blue is quite toxic. Be careful. Quote Link to post

andyfr1968 772
Mazing, that's probably the best reply I've ever seen about home blueing, spot on Edit to add... XRX, it's been quite a few years since I had anything to do with blueing but Abby used to do a cold blueing chemical that if used as Mazing's described worked very well.
