Sorry i havent been back on this thread as iv been busy. Tyson was an all time great in his day {pre douglas fight } imo in his prime he would of beat the likes of joe louis, marciarno, and joe fraser imperticular as tyson had a better chin, it annoys me when people make unfounded comments about him like he was a bully, tyson had a lot of fights with people not sceared of him donnie long, jose ribalta, reggie gross, midge green, even pinklon, and ruddock and all were beat most by ko, and comments like tysons bubble burst when he met higher class apponents thats rubbish he beat everyone up untill douglas and lots were top class apponants, Jamming the nose bone up in to the brain was a comment said by tyson after the jessie fergusson fight not tucker fight also tucker did put douglas down but it was a t,ko and as for tucker breaking his hand in the tyson fight there was never any word of this that i ever heard ,also tyson wasent getting hurt in fights because of a good defence you dont go in the ring and fight with your face especially with heavy weights, i agree with duckwing post, and lastly amir kahn is a good fighter {fast puncher} but time will tell, but for me naz was much better ;)

Tyson kod Holmes in 1988 and kod Ferguson in 1986..Holmes beat him on points in 1992 (mercers first pro defeat) and Ferguson lost to him on points in 1993(if i remember right)Mercer was however a good fighter and I thought he at least deserved a draw when he fought Lewis. This was the start of the time when fighters would rather fight contenders than the other belt holders. There should only be one belt in each weight class then that would ensure that all the top fighters do meet in the ring rather than everyone arguing over what might have been.

so would we call duran a cur ? :hmm:

Personally i do, "we" can call him whatever they want.

Agree with a lot of what you said Mick, any fight that Mercer goes the distance in i would put money on him not getting a result...simply by dint of him not being very profficient at the art. Nevertheless he did fracture two assosiated Tyson skulls for a do at returning a slight to Iron Mike and later got paid $3m step aside money. Yeah the Mercer Lewis fight was real close, something about Lewis seemed to pull the best performance out of "some" of his opponents (Bruno....dont laugh).

I agree mate Mercer was a rough lad and he starred himself in some good old battles. He was able to go the distance with Holyfield and Lewis and they both stopped Tyson.Thats why I honestly think they should only be one belt and they would have to meet.Promoters and fighters nowadays prefer the easy money defending against contenders.Thts why I think the UFC is so popular having one champion and all the contenders waiting in line for a shot.

ps I edited my other post as Mercer beat Ferguson in a later rematch.

With all due respect mate...an all time great gets judged to be an all time great on the fighters he fought and how those fighters compared to the greats that other "all time greats" fought.....now are you honestly comparing tysons victories over people such as pinklon thomas, tony tubbs, tyrell biggs, frank bruno x2,michael spinks, trevor berbick etc etc etc...to marciano/louis/frazier/foreman/ali/norton and any combination of fights in those eras ??? :icon_eek:

As for tysons chin...the man wasnt punched for the first 25/30 fights of his career...people were too scared to hit him incase they caught a counter ! when fighters did hit him, they knocked him down or stopped him...when did tyson EVER dig deep and come back to win a fight he was losing ?

you say he beat everyone up till douglas and lots were top class opponents...name 1....name just 1 fighter he fought pre douglas who was top class on an all time scale ?....he beat the best of the shit that was around at the time thats all.

Tyson was probably the easiest to read fighter ever,i remember when he got a cut and his corner were closing the cut and he screamed like a girl...like the times when he kept complaining to the ref every time he was hurt in the holyfield/lewis fights...like the time he knew he couldnt beat a man and did the most childish desperate act to get out of a fight(twice) to act hard rather than walk off with his tail between his legs!

as for the question on fights that epitomise courage

ali/frazier

gatti/ward....first 2 fights.
