My Mooching Pal Jess

This is Jess my 24 month old bitch , she is a 24 inches tall 5/8 Greyhound 3/8 Collie, who bred her does not matter to either her or me, but what she is does.

While she is no record breaker , and when compared to some of the feats of other gifted & talented dogs and their owners on this site . She is eager to please ,is intelligent & biddable ,has a good turn of speed, good feet , steady around livestock & never once opened up , and has taken both fur & feather, while mooching around in daylight.

I am in my mid 50’s as such one of the older crowd, cold dark nights on the lamp are a thing of the past. Walking in the country with a dog which can slip off the path or lane in to a field , and take a rabbit for the pot without any fuss or drama , is for me anyway what I was looking for eg “an old style Lurcherâ€.

This little bitch is ideal type for a “one dog owner†who has the time to spend on bringing on a dog , Collie crosses may not be for everyone as in the two bitches I have had , are at the start slower in coming on and need a gentle hand , when compared with other crosses , but have the potential to be trained to a high level.

For me I was looking for a dog that would perform , not just in the field but be good / socialised with other dogs and people & places , as such be equally at home in the field taking the odd rabbit or , lying under the table in the Pub waiting for its owner to take her home, as such is a pleasure to own.

I have had dogs most of my life (mostly terries) Jess is my second Collie cross lurcher , who like the first was a pleasure to be around, so if anyone is limited to one dog , who has to fit in with the family and field , this is a cross that maybe one you should consider.[/font]

The only thing that concerns me is being one of the 'older crowd' in my fifties. I've a way to go yet but hope to god I'm not ready to hang my lamp up until well beyond my fifties!!! Fair play to you Bodger - really nice bitch an a great take on things from you! But c'mon man get that lamp charged - you know you want to. Really love the bitch!

nice dog as long as your happy with her thats all that counts i think picking the right dog to suit your hunting type is overlooked when new people are coming into the game or even people that have been in the game a few years

Nice looking bitch. Only ever had collie crosses myself but my type of hunting sounds similar to yours , not out to break any records , one for the pot is enough.

got a collie cross my self comeing up to 11 month now and she is a great dog to own always eager to please and has had a few rabbits in the day then likes nowt better to curl up on the sofa when she gets home or lie under the table at the local pup waiting for her bag of crisps if we stop of for a quick one on the way home.
