how to select ferrets for a good breeding stock ?

Recommended Posts

We're lucky to have a very healthy stock of working ferrets here in the UK at present, so it's very easy to put two totally unrelated ferrets together and be relatively confident of the results.

However, with the current trend people wanting to buy and breed something 'that little bit different', (silver/angora/black ferrets/etc) that could change at some point in the future...

The positive thing is that there are still plenty of ferreters who put working ability over anything else, so there should always be good unrelated stock available. We'll just have to be more selective in the future when choosing.

Two seasons good graft , get out with others see there stock working match it with your own don't be to sentimental with mediocre ferrets get rid don't breed from, a good ferret will really get going in it's second season : if there's rabbits in a burrow for me you shouldn't see a ferret it should be down till the warrens empty , not hole hopping ,

Ive had mine forty odd year's only last few years stopped breeding them and getting youngsters in but they get used and any that dont make the grade dont stay never mind think about breeding from them .If i wanted to start breeding again a few of the local guys have some of mine and ive seen them work and roughly know what i would use .But they must be a workhorse over the season and no on a odd day out

Yer you can use relatives in a breeding programe.

Things i look for are general health and ruggedness, a good few seasons of hard hard graft, something that stands out in how they work and a good temprament.

You should need to breed rarely, as how many ferrets do you go through?

I.e, i have a litter here now, first in years.

I will not need to breed again for at least 3 years, but more like 6.

Very well put Ideation we work between 10 and 15 ferrets we only breed when we need to top up our own stock due to ferrets retireing or turning up there toes or a few very close friends need any most years the vasectomised hob is kept very busy breeding only the very best workers to each other is the only way to get good kitts but even this is no gaurantee we have had the same bloodlines for quite a few years now and thankfully have got a good team of workers

My main thing is i like a ferret that will follow bolted rabbits to the surface then go back to ground and if the rabbit wont bolt stay till dug too ,a ferret that keeps popping out or leaves the rabbit when your there with the spade is no use to me . And out of twelve jills id only breed one
