Blue one 89
if whippets are so good why is there 2 dogs chasing in nearly every pic? no one saying there so good / more of a case of there not that bad/ singlehanded I think Tom has answered your question, to be honest the more people who believe the urban myths about these dogs the better as it keeps the messers and dog swappers away, becoming too popular could really be a bad thing totally agree, well said. I think a few you fellows are missing the point,,,, the question???? can the WHIPPET, do a Hare??? the answer is Yes, if the running conditions are right, and if its a good lye-on, no question some are very Gutsy, but the downside is INJURY PRONE, FEET AND COAT, YES THERE WILL BE, some who are strong and Hard, the whippet was the working mans sporting dog,IE ( miners, loved those wee dogs, and to toughen them up they crossed them with the Bedlington terrier,((( I owned one could not stop her from hunting on, she was a nightmare, once on a Hot scent she was gone, but for me cross a good racing whippet,25lb to 30lb onto hill collie collie bitch, the result of that Mating was a very good rabbit dog, biddable, marking holes, and able to tell you were the ferret and rabbit were, when they were stuck up, ((( days before the Ferret indicating collars came out, bolting rabbits, that slipped the net, or you missed a bolt hole, work the rough, catch pheasants,,,,if the conditions were right, a strong windy blustery day, and the pheasant was sheltering under a good beach hedge, then you saw a proper little dog go to work, and it was a pleasure to witness, such fast work, and retrieve, to Hand each one,((((( Quote Link to post
jf1970 328
but thin coats, and poor feet, I have never kept one myself, I prefere, a more robust type dog, most pure whippets, have good feet, sounds like you have never kept a whippet before!? Read my post it clearly states I never owned one, but saw plenty in my days, in the 60s and 70s whippet racing was very common, and Blue one, your the type a person who sits behind a key board, and tries to rubbish peoples posts, get a life and a decent dog while you are it  Quote Link to post

Guest bezza
My working whippet has never had an injury and she is certainly capable of catching a hare without any law being given. She is is extremely gutsy and very biddable. In fact, she is the most biddable dog I've ever had in 40 years of keeping running dogs. The only disadvantage of running a whippet is that they tend to yap when chasing and you cannot run them all night on the lamp. They do not have the wind of say a collie cross. Apart from that they will do everything a lurcher will do including retrieving to hand. I find a big advantage of running a whippet is that nobody takes any notice if you are walking a whippet,in the countryside, but if you are walking a lurcher you are a marked man. 1 Quote Link to post

Well said, apart from the yapping bit, giving tongue i call it, suppose im fortunate because none of mine do it, and its a no no for me, never had to train em retrieve to hand, it just come natural, and even now i praise em when they do it, i can walk anywhere with em and never been pulled, i wouldnt have any other breed, but thats cos i only do bunnies, as fer injuries, barbed wire jobs, nowt serious i could handle missen, wouldnt be without em, my best mates, call me a saddo if you like but i have had and will continue to have some fantastic moments with my dogs, both in and out the field Quote Link to post
