Christ theres some shit talked on here a whippet around 30lbs is more than capable of taking hares, as for poor feet and thin skin, usually a remark from someone with a total ignorance of the breed, mine regularly took hares in jan and feb not in summer, a fit hare is the ultimate chase for any dog no matter what cross or purebreed. :big_boss:

So how many match whippets can you name, I don't doubt whippets will catch hares from time to time, no doubt they might catch more than my old springer used to do. Any running dog will catch a few in a lifetime given the right circumstances but with all honesty, I've owned pedigree whippets that barely gained ground on rabbits on short grass that had maybe a 20 yard start.

but thin coats, and poor feet, I have never kept one myself, I prefere, a more robust type dog,

 most pure whippets, have good feet, sounds like you have never kept a whippet before!?

Then all i can say mate is you never had the right stock, only saluki cross owners claim to do 3out of3 5out5 ect question was can whippets do hares, yes they can but no dog has a 100% record on winter hares.

Your right about the stock mate, I did get better whippets. I do like whippets, great little rabbiting dogs and of course they will do the odd hare, just as my old springer did on several occasions. All I'm saying is you don't go out and buy a whippet if you intend running hares. I've seen dogs do 3's , 5's and even owned a dog that did 7's but none of them were whippets.

Guy didn't really 'rubbish' your post did he, just gave his differing opinion, you're both right, poor coats and good feet.

But YOU did slag him and his dogs off without knowing either.

So maybe, take your own advice?

A fair point, but nowt to do with the question really.

And you have some interesting dogs about you, whippets who can't catch rabbits with a 20 yrd start on short grass, but old spaniels that can catch hares.

Not got any of them now mate, when I say my old springer , I mean old as in a long time ago,and yes she did take quite a few out the seat. I've been in this game for 51 years now, so seen and done a lot. If I ever went back to whippets it would definitely be of the non pedigree racing variety. As for nowt to do with the question, are you suggesting that if someone asked if springers can do hares I should say yes ! Mike.

I asked a guy who ran his whippet with the East of England how many were caught (hares) in a season? He reckoned around about ten but of course that's under rules with proper law. Everyone was in it for the sport and to test and compare dogs.

Precisely ! says it all really and that's with two dogs .

Yeah with proper law not carrying the dog upto the hare and dropping it on top of it they'll catch hares and some would be better than others but it's obvious they are not hare dogs per say it doesn't really have to be pointed out.
