got my rebarreled m595 back at last in 17 rem fireball

Recommended Posts

well got back from holiday in north Devon saturday dinner time. and then had the gun smith call to say the tikka m595 action we had given him alone with a unchambered shilen stainless match barrel had been fitted, chambered, screw cut and crowned, invisible thread cap and proofed.

was going to have the barrel bead blasted but I prefer it as it is to be fair. also with a bit of wet and dry it can take the marks off it easy if it gets knocked about.

off to reloading solutions on Thursday to get the remaining reloading bits and bobs for it and cleaning items. then I will do some load testing for it.

20 grain vmax and 25 grain Berger varmint bullets should go well in it powered by some h322 powder,

got to keep it as single shot at moment and will see how i get on with it. it will feed but isn't as reliable as Richard who done the rifle would have liked. the MAG needs a block in the back

and the plunger and extractor has been modified but the bolt head itself needs work to make the cases exit smooth

anyway here are some pictures

Which side of the bed is Miss Tikka going to sleep Jamie - good idea about taking some wet and dry to bed with you !!!!

Seriously - nice bit of kit and once you get them shooting, the 17's can shoot things at silly distances. My friend who I help develop loads for (Just a standard Rem 17 with border barrel) shoots crows way out past 300 yds with the 25gr Bergers. Enjoy it - dont forget 1/10 of a grain makes a difference with these little fellas.

that barrel should be awsome.i am picking up my rem .17 fireball this week, have orderted an accuracy international stock to mount it on .going to see how she shoots and take it from there.i had a border 1 in 11 put on my .204 and it shoots under .30" with three different loads :D .still missed a three hundered yrd rabbit three times yesterday could not master the blustery wind.would be interested in sharing load development tips if you are up for it.

cheers mike

Personally I would have left it with Richard until the rest of the work required to make the mag, bolt, and extractor work properly had been done. As I detest having any firearm that doesn't function as required. Always a problem when you decide to adapt a donor action.

Such niggling teething problems are behind my decision to keep my Tikka 17Rem as spec when I rebarrell it this year, and continue putting up with the variable quality Remington manufactured brass rather than moving over to a MachIV.

hi mate i just wanted the rifle back. I will see how I get on with it. and if it I really need it as a muti shot. the mag isnt a problem, the exteactor is done its a bit of tac weld on the bolt what is needed to stop the case slipping up the chamfer of the bolt.

trouble is i dont really want to start messing with the bolt itself because you wouldn get a bolt for these rifles if this was got knacked. a lad i know has tried and the imports said they dont do them anymore.

i would have preferred the 17 rem but he didn't have the reamer for it. and the barrel I had was 1 in 10 twist. and in 17 rem I would prefer a 1 in 9 so it would shoot the 25 vmax

Yes..that's taking the gun under the pillow to extremes!:thumbs:

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it, just what is it you had in mind for this calibre?

ATB!

i deker i had the action already and the barrel blank come along cheap. but it was a 1 in 10 twist thats why i went for the fireball

as if i went for the 17 rem I would have preferred a 1 in 9 twist. for the 25 vmax.

the rifle was built so I could use it on some land I have permission on where the ground is not very hilly in places. and well i still know care has to be taken the 17 fb

is ideal for such land due to the very rare exit on foxes etc. it will also be used on pigeons and rabbits. i like the fact it doesnt use much powder, low recoil, and dumps all the ftlb in the quarry

hi mate my friend got to barrel blanks that where for sale in countryman of derby. but he sold me one as his tikka m595 17 remington was still to good to rebarrel.

your better off giving border barrels a ring and see what blanks they have

What sort of barrel life can you expect from the Fireball??????

it differs from site to site mate. i know a load that has put 2000 + down his with no throat wear showing so its a good little affective calibre.

nice! the rifle looks great! though I personaly can't get excited about the fireball, seems as though remington needed something to boost sales and publicity :D

17 cf rifles just isnt that popular over here and have never been a big seller for the gunmakers.

you do get the die hard 17 cf fans though. i use to see people rave about them and guesssed what it was all about.

but now from using the fb abit i can see why they love them. min recoil, not to loud, very flat shooting, im hitting 4033 fps average on 18 grains of powder and 20 vmax. and very safe compared to other cf rounds. what is not to like :D:tongue2:
