Lurcher Breeding ? What is needed.

I've been thinking on this breeding of the perfect lurcher for your own permission for quite a while. The land you hunt, the way you hunt and the quarry your after are all major factor's in what you look for from your dog.

The the land I hunt has very few Rabbits so you don't get many runs (so stamina not really an issue) but has a fair amount of larger/faster stuff so the ones you did get were all about speed. Most fields are between 5-12 acres each so a dog's got room to open up a bit but also still needs enough drive to be able to hit into the cover and tackle shot, toothed game.

I also need my dog to work with a gun so has to be eager for training and biddable with it.

Roo was for me, almost the ultimate dog for running on my permission, extremely fast, hard, but seemed to run smart and worked out differant techniques for tackling each quarry, knowing when to hit cover and when to hold back.

Bad points were he couldn't turn for sh*t and had no interest in training. (He was a real stuggle just to get the basic's into).

Tess his daughter on the other hand is the complete opposite, very trainable, and a pleasure to work with. Picked up working with shotguns and centrefires within a trip out or two. Can turn on a six pence with very good agility and drive. Bad points, basically she's too slow! She struggles to get on terms with the quarry quick enough.

So personally for me the best breeding would be a trainable Roo or a fast Tess.

What I've decided to try and find is a 2nd generation, 1/4Bullgrey X 1/4 Colliegrey from decent working parents.

Thought a 2nd gen breeding would give me more chance of them throwing more typey and less chance of too much of one particular breed showing through.
