Which cross

Now I know the answer should be from tried and tested parents but if you were buying a pup purely for fox and deer which cross would you put your faith in?

speaking pre-ban obviously.... i wouldnt have thought "i need a bull or deerhound to drop a deer" fair enough they CAN do it. I think i would go for medium sized dog like greyhound/saluki/whippet something of that sort maybe with a bit of collie thrown in. That would be if the deer i was hunting were roe. For fallow i would have two :11:

 

I've never been a fan of bullx's but the dog i have now has got a wee bit of bull in her.

always thought the 2 sighthounds that were the keenest or most naturaly inclined to take larger quarry was the deerhound and the saluki,I remember in the late 70's there were a few deerhound/saluki/greyhound's crosses in this area of scotland,seen one work and it was exceptional.

The crosses that float my boat but are very different are Deer/Grey & Saluki/Grey,and one of the best Deer/Grey,s ive seen was a 7/8 Deerhound 1/8 Greyhound bitch - she was pure Deerhound in looks but did have an extra electric spark IMHO.

i run half bred weaten xthree quater bull will do job on deer not just roe do not do alot of fox but what he has done he is class

for the big deer you do need a bull x really,just because of their jaw power,and will to hold on,but as catch dogs a good fast saluki x is a lot better imo,took many big fallow before the ban with the saluki x's.

Can't beat a "GOOD" saluki based lurcher IMO. They have no limitations can kill off a long slip in the day or do a full night on the beam

Bullx for me I dont do deer but like taking old charlie on and have seen alot of dogs doing it but most are bullx's. Never realy worked with other x's much. My mate has a Kelpie cross that will do fox.
