redjimp 8
Took Puggy on a walk through the local park yesterday , hes about 5 months old and is still only on his obedience training , so he didnt get bored , afterwards i took him through the woods to harrass a few grey squirels which must of got his blood up because on the way back through the park he must of jumped 4 foot to take a wood pigeon which he promptly brought to me alive but held wrong so it flapped all the way back , unfortunately the park was really busy with kids , and when i took it off him he gave it up but then snatched at it and ripped its wing off , claret pumped all over him i finished it off and put it in the bag for the ferret . Kids were crying two blokes with golf clubs started ranting at us so i made a show of telling him off and scarpered , by the time we got home though i felt bad, i should of been watching what he was upto closer and his retrieve had been pretty good until the last bit and hes only a learner . Will i have discouraged his prey drive? Quote Link to post

Tomm Parr 30
Will i have discouraged his prey drive? I reckon you should have praised him but done it quietly, so as not to blatantly distress or piss off the public. clueless idiots they might be (happy to eat animals yet disapprove of their killing or hunting) BUT but it only takes one idiot to put grief at your door, even if the RSPCA know they can't do anything and the Police'd probably laugh and walk off to catch real crims. My pup did exactly the same thing to a duck in Ross-on-Wye 2 weeks ago when i was launching the canoe, on the green by a pub with tens of bystanders. He didn't kill it as he's still young (8 and 1/2m) but it was shaken up and missing quite a few wing feathers. I praised him quietly, let the duck go and just walked off without looking at anyone. No sense making a siuation worse, especially in this age of fluffies and animal huggers. Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
Quiet praise I reckon, a similar thing happened when my wife took the pup round the local playing fields last season when I had done my back in, the pup caught and retieved a rabbit back to the wife in front of the local school kids P.E. lesson and she fell on her arse in the process, the kids screams turned to laughter and when she was lying sprawled in the mud they asked her what kind of dog is that, one of the teachers took the bunny of the pup and The wife doesn,t know what he done with, maybe had it for his tea lol, my back felt better for a wee while when she came in covered in mud and told me what had happened Quote Link to post
