rob190364 2,594
To keep my ferrets fit and occupied this summer I'm thinking I might give them a few sessions above ground in thick brambles, flushing rabbits for my lurcher pup. Not that bothered if they don't shift much, it's just to give them a run out really and anything they flush is a bonus. Does anyone else do this? Whether it's in summer or winter? I know they won't be as effective as a terrier or spaniel at flushing through cover but where there's obvious runs in small areas of thick brambles they should do the job shouldn't they? Gave them a run through a big wood pile a couple of weeks back, there was nothing of note in there but they loved climbing around and exploring....plus, both of these exercises are good practice for my lurcher to get used to concentrating on what the ferrets are doing before I take her ferreting next season. Ideation 8,216
Only time it's really worked is woodpiles / brush piles, hay barns, silage bails etc. 1 Quote Link to post
zac! 0
i wouldn't bother working above ground just scare them out throw a few stones in or hit the brambles with sticks that usually works for me if rabbits are in thick cover Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
Can't wait til I get a bloody spaniel or terrier or summat, so bloody frustrating when there's tons of rabbits about but all diving into thick cover, then even if your lurcher goes in the cover after them there's nothing to catch them when they bolt Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Get two pairs of trousers on and get in there! I'm often to be seem around my locality leaping in hedges or diving into patches of brambles Quote Link to post

NEWKID 27,048
Don't think I'd fancy putting a ferret through the brambles in case they found a hole could be a nightmare especially now with young around, my terrier was working through some thick bramble a while back could here her on rabbits but none would bolt, climbed in a bit myself and found there was holes in there that I never knew about would have been a pain in the arse to dig. Used to do a barn filled with bales years ago was pretty good and had a few out each time. Never done log piles though. Quote Link to post

No rabbits mate, used to put a long net around it, was an open barn with bales in, never big numbers but would always get a few Quote Link to post
