Its all about hunting up, sitting on flush, not rushing in to retrieve etc but i have never seen a trail dog do anything a lurcher trained in that way couldnt do mate! I even know someone who used to walk the woods with a of old lurchers after the shoot had finished and pick up birds the pick ups had missed lol Quote Link to post

Come back and tell me when you can mate..... Quote Link to post

Could you honestly say your labs could do that then mate? Yes mate my big dog can do that easy and my old bitch(10) could go back the distance and find the bird but she would struggle with the fence mate. Hopefully my 2 pups will be getting near that kind of standard next year too.... What i would say though if i was looking for a dog to put food on the table then obviously a lurcher would be the dog for the job..... Quote Link to post

Paid 935
Never seen a lurcher herd sheep. So maybe as a hunting dog, you are right, but as a working dog, I would have to put the collie first as the best dog in the countryside. Quote Link to post

Casso 1,261
Lurchers are generally an intelligent dog with fair amount of drive, so are most other dogs bred to work with man, those traits can be channeled into different elements of work whatever it is,, saying that , once those traits are present, it falls to the owner and his ability with dogs , and thats where the real answer lies, in the handler,,not the dog, Quote Link to post
Malt 379
There was a similar thread to this a while back.. I don't think a lurcher would live with a purpose bred gun dog at the top of it's game. I will say that I reckon a lurcher will do a gun dog's job better than a gun dog will do a lurcher's job though.. Quote Link to post

Your right there It's also the question of - if you wanted to train a lurcher (probably collie based) as a gun dog you could, but you would be dismantling the lurcher in it. Not sure you could have a lurcher that does its own job very well AND that of the gun dog very well. You'd probably end up shooting your lurcher. And then you have water fowling, few lurchers would stick that at its toughest. Quote Link to post
