Its not only first season dogs that fail, any terrier thats worked sore time and time again will eventually throw in the towel.I know of 1 very good bitch that was dug to in all sorts of places and nev

if they are under 20 months for there first season, i think once a month is enough allow them to fully heal and keep them winning, many young dogs will be classed as rubbish in there first season but

Working a "hard" dog lightly in it's first season only encourages that style and does nothing to help that dog find all their gears, it's a common mistake. Every dog is different and need bringing o

Agree kevin,10 or 12 is plenty especially if they are hard,no point in ruining them before they find there feet, alot depends on age you start them aswell.

good topic kev alot depends on age of the dog on its first season

and if he gets away with getting stick when working

some times i think 4 or 5 would be enough if he is getting it hard but

a sounder mixer type over double that would be ok

seen more terriers last when they where given plenty of time to heal in first season

interesting to see other peoples views

good post i think between 10 and 15 digs is plenty in dogs first season altho i do think you need too keep pushing them that wee bit harder after each dig i think if you kept them too easy spots for there first 10 or 12 digs its going too be a big shock when they finally get in deep end last season i loaned a young dog out too a mate he started off well with few digs under his belt then he had bit of a wobble in a place that was a bit much for him but he learned more that day than from the previous handy digs he then went extremley well there after i took him back near end of season and while a few mates were over for the weekend we dug him twice in the one day a nice dig of 1.2 really easy digging and a stiff dig through hard ground of near the 2 meter mark in a very big place and he woked very well indeed but if he d of had easy digs all through the season he def would not off dug the big place at end of season it was the wakeup call the day he was in another big place and got put through his paces that made him in my opinion but next season will be the real test hopefully he come s through the other end .

i think the reason a lot of dogs dont make the grade is too many lads think they need to be tested in there first season i saw a young bitch doin very well this season on a tough dig and two weeks later i heard the bitch had a blip and was gone i think the owner is to blame then for havin her out so soon again jmho
