BOLIO1 1,078
Very nice looking pair Young Fella, and typical of the type I've owned and hunted with over here when I was at the foxes years ago. We had the wheaten sire out regularly too so there was no guess work as to the quality or breeding of the crosses. The odd litter that was produced by B.T. (yes B.T., not T.B.), was spread among the lads who all hunted together for nothing, not sold off. I remember one smooth coated 3/4 greyhound 1/4 wheaten bitch that he kept which was slow to start, ignoring foxes until she was nearly 3 years old, but when she switched on she became a demon. I can't remember any from that particular wheaten dog that failed while I was hunting with those lads. Best of luck with your two and I hope you'll keep us posted on how they go for you! iceman001979 1,316
Love the way that people who don't even have running dogs or wheaten cross has so much to say about them(SAM). THERE IS SHIT IN ALL BREEDS OFF LUCHERS.Why because people breed shit to shit and expect to get world beaters.Yes lines do count but not all the time because you don't use a sire or dam that people have heard off mines the lines shit???? Wheatens on par with whippets :toast: take you have never seen a working whippet or wheaten .There is a difference between a working dog and a show dog and if you don't know then get out off dogs and leave it to people who do. you love the sound of your own advice lol lol bet ye misses sleeps wae a blade under her pillow....one day just one day :feck: whippets are poo!!! Who let you out off your cage???whippets are poor not a big fan myself off them but them are good rabbit dog if they where not why do so many people run them. And a misses are you nuts that is why l sleep with the blade the same person that let you out of yours...nothing a whippet can do that a purpose bred lurcher cant  your right there l agree but then you wont win shows Quote Link to post
SPOTTY BACKED BIG RACK 90
so we all agree then that theses wheatens we are talking about are all shit and have made up pedigrees. Quote Link to post

I tend to avoid spouting shite about a subject I have no knowledge of where possible. 1 Quote Link to post
lurcher330 2,297
Ireland has a long history of producing outstanding dogs that have excelled at various forms of fieldwork ,particularly those involving the use of 'heavy dogs'.the Irish Wheaten terrier is a breed that unfortunately over the years has been dwindling in numbers.i refer to the true working wheaten, not the powder puff show version, whose character has suffered alarmingly as a result of the shows fraternities obsession with physical conformation.this of course has been the ruination of the character in many other breeds and indeed has resulted in physical abnormalities and the chronic ill health for many of the recognised K.C breeds.the working wheatens comes in a wide range of shapes and sizes ,resulting from dogs being bred for performance only.If a dog or bitch has been proven to perform to a satisfactory standard, they are bred from, regardless of shape or size.Obviously for a breed that is required to travel up burrows for even a few feet there has to be an upper limit on how big these dogs become ,but i have seen 21 inch dogs perform this task with ease.Conversely,i have seen others barely 17 inches perform to the same high standard.good examples from the past of this size variation were 'Hacketstown Jack ' and his famous son'Peter Sinead' ,both at different ends of the spectrum in terms of size, but both superb dogs in the field. By 'Latharna' taken from the book 'DEAD GAME' 'IRISH STRONG DOGS OF OLD'.if yis want to see some pedigrees of wheatens this is a book worth checking out .most of the lines written about in this book are still around today and are still worked and a lot of the wheaten x lurchers that are around around Ireland today came from these dogs but saying that every fawn rough coated lurcher i come across is said to be a wheaten x but im not fully convinced.the lurcher bitch in the picture is one of my wheaten xs whos line is written about in this book Quote Link to post
