gnasher16 30,496
Some of those players are just not good enough Malt and some of them clearly thought they were better than they are. I for one have long wanted to see Paulo Di Canio get the managers job, loose cannon maybe but the guy has real passion, has played and won things at the very highest level and most of all he knows what it means to be a supporter. He deffinately helped the Rio/Frank/Joe generation become more than they would have been as players.........and he could show the Carlton Coles of this world how you go about knocking a goal or two in the back of the net......my personal opinion is, the likes of Cole wouldnt make a PDC team!! In the dressing room, when a bloke who has played for some of the greatest teams in the world tells you it aint good enough at half time, then you know it aint good enough.....end of......and so what if theres a bit of screaming and shouting, after 23 years of playing adult football myself I can tell you, its what is required sometimes! A good kick up the arse never did any team any harm and those without the passion to respond shouldnt be in the f*****g team. I though he may get the job when they brought in Glen Rhoder, a man whos greatest acheivement was to be Gazzas bag carrier at Lazio......please tell me what part of that made sense? Dont know if its just me, but when a game is going down the pan with 15 minutes on the clock you want to see that your manager is feeling the pain with you, you want him kicking the waters bottles and doing his nut........not sat there like a cardboard f*****g cut out! When you dont have money to spend, then you need balls and passion (remember the crazy gang?)......and I think Paulo has that in droves. As you know Wilf Paolo is loved down here,he even has a lounge suite named after him !....but a football manager he is not, passion and enthusiasm will only get you so far, look what happened last time we put a great foreign player in charge who had virtually no experience in management,Zola went out and bought a bunch of foreign players and totally disregarded what this club has been built on.....young local talent......Tony Carr is the hero behind this club yet his power has been taken away by foreign managers who dont understand the traditions round here. I disagree about the players, this squad of players is probably better than any other squad in the lower half of the premier league on paper....when those players dont perform they have to take responsibilty, but so does the manager and Avram Grant is about as inspirational as a dead slug ! He is THE worse manager in premiership history and thats proven.Gold and Sullivan have made bad decisions, the main one being the appointment of Grant. In some ways ive half wanted us to go down as ive known it will force the old traditions back into this club, the wage bill of West Ham is the 6th highest in the premier league, players like Kieran Dyer earning fortunes for nothing,8 million pound Benni Macarthy another of Grants/Gold/Sullivans great decisions....8 million and he played 12 games was it,no goals and got rid because he was too fat !!...good buiseness eh.Many of these players are now out of contract so will go for no money,BUT the club will save on their wage bill....Parker will be 10 mill,a few others will go for decent money....but best of all West Ham will be forced to go back to young local talent....it maybe a step backwards to go 2 forwards...but i have faith in the traditions of this club and thats what will get us back up,maybe not at the first time of asking but certainly within 3 years.Last time we went down and the club was stripped and rebuilt,we came back up to an FA cup final and top half of the table finish....hopefully the same will happen. lanesra 3,994
Gnasher your a proper football man mate , i hold my hands up im only an armchair supporter , though i still get times when im really p1ssed off with Arsenal so i can relate to your drive home mate , i agree you would do well going back to what all football fans know West Ham for , bringin local talent through the academy , players the fans can relate too who will give there all and at times when it aint good enough the fans will accept that though also need to have experience round them to help , Scott Parker is a very wealthy man so he doesnt need more money though maybe his international carreer may force the move but keepin him would be a great result for the club, him movin though may be financially sound/needed , Freddie Shears is he still with yous ? as for new manager id look in house mate , is Alan Devonshire still involved in the game , he could pass a ball , also thinkin off the west ham teams ive seen over the last 30 odd yrs youve had some class FOOTBALLERS , John Moncour was a player i liked though he never really got the recognision he deserved outside upton park. Keep your chin up mate August will soon be here and you will be dyin to see the fixture list that will have you buzzin again .

Gnasher, you know your football mate, theres no doubt about it but I will argue a couple of points mate (in a nice over a mug of tea kind of way ): Just my opinion, but local young talent will only get you so far......its a nice idea but you need folk who have been there and done it to take that to another level. We will have a world class stadium and in order to put world class players on the pitch they need to be moulded by someone who has been there with the best in the world. Its like playing Sunday league then going and playing good standard Saturday league, you need to up it and you will do that quicker and better with players who have been playing at that level around you. Arsenal dont just chance across young players who can play football in such a beautiful way, they have had they instilled from the time of Viera, Henry, Petit, Bergkamp....you play next to the likes of Dennis Bergkamp I guarantee any player will be better than he may have been. Zola was a very different player to PDC, different manner totally........a really nice guy, skillful, no doubt about it, but you wouldnt make him captain of your team would you Mr Nobody managers with mid to low table written all over their faces just dont rock my boat I am afraid, just my way, but if your gonna go down then go down letting the world know you aint happy .......as a player and football fan I would rather see the manager and the team feeling the pain with me. You say the team was the best ever on paper, well that is as maybe but the league dont lie and the fact is they were shite........its their in black and white. I would like to know how many yellow cards Upson picked up compared to the same position in teams that have not given away a lot of goals this season?.........you know yourself, if your fully committed and tackling hard at full speed for 90 minutes every week you will pick up quiet a few, if your just f*****g about and not playing hard enough then you wont collect many FACT. I agree with you totally about nearly all the rest, I think going down will be good for the club in lots of ways but I beleive if we spend money on anything, then lets spend it on a coach/manager who has been there at the highest level who all this young talent can aspire to. gonetoearth 5,144
Well thats my Hammers dead and buried.....i dare say some of us take sport too serious sometimes but when you put so much hope into something for so little reward it can be a depressing path we walk.I love this club, its cost me literally thousands over the years without ever really having much to shout about,so to fall away like we have tests every last bit of loyalty, the times ive said " thats it ive had enough "....as any real fan of a club knows, you always go back ! Coming back down the m6 yesterday i was adamant i would never go to another West Ham game,by the time i got home i realised id had 3 phone conversations with pals about new managers, new players, new grounds we would be going to next year !! This club has so many problems it would be daft to blame one thing we just have to accept we are not Man Utd,Liverpool or Arsenal and never will be....while you lads are visiting Old Trafford,Anfield and The Emirates next year.....some of us will be plodding along to Doncaster,Barnsley and the like Ive always believed competetive sport can test a mans character like nothing else,i just thought that all stopped when you dont compete anymore ....how wrong i was. Congratulations to the big clubs i hope Utd go on and win the Champions league and OUR Rio lifts the trophy gnasher gutted for the irons think as an everton fan i can relate to the journey you have been on but all ways stick with your club you never jumped on a band wagon all starry eyed with succes you chose the local club be proud of that and wish your club a speedy return to the prem will miss one man went to mo and bubbles you will like donny

Wilf i dont know anymore than the next man mate and you yourself know the club and know the area so your opinions as valued as anyones.....so in a nice over a cup of rosie kind of way i,ll just add...i didnt mean the whole entire squad or even team,i just meant how it used to be....of course you cant have a whole team of fresh faced youngsters you need the experienced players to help bring them through,as an example Trevor Brooking,Billy Bonds when Cottee,Dicks and their generation were coming through.....all i mean is this club was never about going out buying expensive footballers to build teams.....im not suggesting anything new im simply suggesting going back to what made the club what is was.....we are realistic as Hammers fans we know the occasional cup run and mid table is as much as we can hope for,the real pride always came in the players we produced it dont matter that they went on to bigger clubs thats to be expected.....when the likes of Lampard,Ferdinanad,Cole,Carrick etc are doing well for the big clubs we all get a little bit of pride knowing we created those players...as a club we gave them and they gave us before moving onto bigger things everyones a winner it costs us nothing we only make money.....this club never had financial problems like today because we have dropped those values and relied on cheap foreign talent.I remember an England friendly a few years back against Holland when 8 of the 11 players had some sort of affiliation to West Ham,that suggests that something is right about this club, for many years we have been the club with the most English players week to week most of who come through the academy, that tells you that this academy works,Tony Carr works.....so why disregard it when its worked all these years. As regards managers we have to be realistic, why would a big name come here....i think Chris Hughton would be perfect at this time for the club,he knows how to get a club back into the premiership,he has played for West Ham and he,s from the area and knows the traditions etc. I didnt say that group of players was the best ever i said they was on paper the best in the lower half of the league,on paper Wolves,West Brom,Birmingham etc would have swapped squads in the blink of an eye....but no your right the table doesnt lie.....and for me when you have a group of good players who are not performing as much responsibility falls on the management as on the players, can you imagine old John Lyall, god rest his soul, allowing a squad as talented as that to under perform the way they have. I agree about Upson, the joke of it all is he was captain !! a man running down his contract who himself couldnt motivate anyone or anything.....anyway,i feel like ive been whingeing 24 hours a day the last few days....whether im with pals, the mrs, even on here ....if i here one more person say " its only football " Edited May 17, 2011 by gnasher16

In your position Lanesra id be pulling my hair out ....at West Ham we know we,re shit...but you have the makings of a title winning team their if only your manager thought the same as the rest of the human population !....but then i think you know that yourself, must be just as frustrating....i cant see you winning anything while he is there, and for such a massive club you have to ask is your board ambitious enough.
